I went there once for a long afternoon. A taxi driver friend took me there from BKK and taxied me around to the different areas. I imagined it was one area for the ruins. But they are all over different areas of the town. I don't remember the names of the different areas but they were quite big. How were you planning on visiting? Your own vehicle? Tour bus? Private tour?

You will be going to different areas of town. So get a good map. Some places there is a lot of climbing and stairs.

I went there by train and then shared a tuk tuk with 2 other guys, one of them very knowledgeable about the ruins but they all seemed to be close together ha ha the fellows and the places; obligatory lunch stop and then to be told the train schedule did not fit so we took a bus back through some heavy traffic. Intend to go there again in late Aug with TGF, so feed back please briofoz, I will be trying Ban Boonchu from booking.com

As said it worth researching, both what you want to see and maps.

It is busy with quite heavy traffic, not the easiest if you do not know where you are going.

The town is also divided in half by river and railway.

The wat's are all over the town some near some far.

Some looked like wat's you could see in other places others are of the old
    architectural style.

The GF said we were supposed to do 9 in one day for LUCKY.

Early start is good as it gets hot.

Interesting ruins, but be a little cautious.
There are "Temple Police" and a couple on our large tour bus took a photograph with the guy standing behind one of the decapitated statues.
The "temple policeman" detained the bus and all of us in it and called the police and we all sat for about 2.5hrs while the issue was argued through.

I went to Ayutthaya for a couple nights on a trip a couple years ago. We took some of the inlaws and they loved every second of it. I highly recommend you have your own car as everything is scattered all over the place, unlike Sukhothai which everything is together and easier to see. As there are so many things to see it would be recommended you research the site/ruins and list exactly what you would liek to see. From meory I used Tripadvisor to help with which sites to visit.
A good map is required (dont rely on the GPS), Sorry i cant remember what map I used but there are heaps on Google.
It is worth the trip but I found after seeing so many ruins they all started to look alike.
    Good luck and enjoy

Only been there once.. From Bangkok, with a all day taxi..
Driver new some some stories, but was no guide at all...

Thing with Ayutthaya is, that there is ancient (Kmer) history, which does not interests Thais too much, and more recent history (of the old Siam capital) that does interests Thai far more than anything that happened 1000 years before..
The area is wide spread, but without a proper guide who knows what he/she is talking about, they are all just ruins..

Some pic's... See my focus on the one that is definitely not a ruin..555

I did find it interesting that when the Burmese invaded they chopped the heads off all the statues. Douchebags..

If anyone is doing a day trip , then I would recommend the coach / boat trips available , a drive out in the morning via the Summer Palace , visit the ruins then return to Bangkok on the river with lunch on the boat , we returned as the sun was setting , great day out
