North Thailand cold spell and weather in general

Interesting reading in this article I read this morning, they described it as a disaster zone with temperatures plumetting below 15 deg up in Northern Thailand..............

    January 14, 2013 5:04 pm
The Governor of the northern province of Lamphun on Monday declared a cold spell disaster zone in all eight districts as temperatures continued to drop.
The cold spell that has hit Lamphun and Mae Hong Son provinces has affected tens of thousands of people.

Lamphun Governor Pinit Haipanit said the temperature has again dropped and that the weather this year is colder than in previous years.

Disaster zones were declared in all eight districts, the governor said. They are Muang, Pa Sang, Ban Hong, Mae Tha, Li, Thung Hua Chang, Ban Thi and Wieng Nong Long. At least 80,000 households in the province have been affected by the cold spell.

Rajprachanukroe Foundation distributed more than 800 blankets to people in Pa Sang district last week and the Thai Red Cross Society will on Thursday distribute sweaters and blankets to affected people in Li and Thung Hua Chang districts.

The governor said the Lamphun Administrative Organisation had already distributed about 13,000 blankets to affected people.

Meanwhile Sawang Momdee, chief of Mae Hong Son's rescue centre said four districts have been declared cold spell disaster zones since last week, after the temperature dropped below 15 degrees Celsius for three consecutive days.

The affected districts were Muang, Pang Mapha and Pai. People in seven districts have asked for a total of 67,032 blankets and sweaters. Over the past few days, about 24,000 people have already received clothes to keep warm during the cold spell, he said.

In the northeastern province of Kalasin, meanwhile, public health chief Dr Pisit Uawongkul, said the temperature at night was between 13 and 15 degrees Celsius though it would fall below that in the mountainous areas. People were lighting small fire to keep themselves warm. He warned residents to be careful about burns and developing dry skin, especially children and elder people.

In Tak, a Myanmar worker; Sor Tan Mong, 31, was found dead in his rented house in Mae Sot district. An initial examination indicated he had been dead for about three hours.

One of his neighbours said that Sor Tan Mong suffered from tuberculosis disease and it was thus likely that his condition had become worse during the cold weather.

It's a freezing 18c here this morning, pack your woolly pyjamas Rivo.

I'm sitting here in boxers whilst Jo's wrapped up in 3 layers including a fleecy jacket. 555
    Cheers, Rob.

Same story is rolled each year along with various dignitaries being shown on Thai TV handing out blankets to the people of the north.

Coldest day so far, here in CM was last sunday was which was a recorded 12 min 27 max.
Up in the hills probably down to 6-8*.

    I can live with that

Many people refer to the spring and autumn as being the best time of the year back home?...similar.

It`s up in the 20`s by the time i go out so some slippers and a pair of long tracky daks are enough in the morning, shorts and T shirt are enough at night as it cools down slowly..
Never felt the need for a heater.

Nice change from dripping in sweat just sitting around.

Yeh , it'd be good for a couple of weeks holiday.

I remember Ramming Lodges pool being freezing when I was last up there.
No good for my daily swimming exercise at all.

I'm sure Moo will correct me if wrong but I'd think our pool a lot warmer than Raming due to sun exposure and design. When did you say you're coming up to visit?
    Cheers, Rob.

    Our pool is fine.

Some of the hotels have their pool in part or a lot of shade which doesn`t help.

The drought has finally broken here with big down pours the last 2 nights. Rain at night is typical of rainy season in the north.

Rainy season may finally be here with the air clearing and a few degrees cooler max temps...39-40 down to 34-36
