    Photo's on the Samoeng Loop

My advice is everyone who visits Chiang Mai needs to do the Sameong Loop, its a simple Halfday drive or motorcycle ride and gets you out of the city of CM into the surrounding mountains. The loop can be done in either direction and is about 100km in total, its basically head south from CM to Hang Dong then turn right towards the mountains and Samoeng then head across to Mae Rim then returning to CM, or do this in reverse.

I have done this ride many times now and still think its one of the best short rides I have done. I usually pick the direction I am going depending on the time of the day, keep the sun behind me is the best for motorcycle riding. Allow extra time if you want to see any of the attractions on the loop such as Elephant Shows, Tiger Park, Snake shows, Waterfalls, Buggies/Quad bikes, Flower Shows or just stop at one of the many Coffee/Drink stops which there are many on the loop.

These pics are from Feb this year..................................

Have you done this ride before Ozzy ?

If not its a great halfday ride to try out the bike before you tackle the Mae Hong son IMO

I would be renting the new Honda CBR 500 for the big ride or maybe a new Forza.

The southern part of the loop road is right near where i live.

Sometimes i take the VFR out and ride to the Samoeng turn off and back again so as to avoid the horrible traffic jam that is Mae Rim>CM..

The last part of that ride is a long climb up a steep winding mountain that i and the bike just love. Certainly a good couple of hours to blow the cobwebs out

This is out there somewhere but i`m yet to find it..

It is very common on this ride to see a Motorcycle Club of Tour Group and quite often they stop for a drink, these pics were taken at one of the drink stops, Moo will know the one.......................

    Some lovely SR`s there

The train is on private property and i think the problem i had with trying to find it was that the gate was closed and it`s out of view from the dirt soi where it is.

The Kawasaki steam train #744 was traced back to having been imported from Japan for use on the Death Railway and then used in service in Thailand before being decommissioned and found again decades later near the Samoeng road.

steam locomotive #744 hidden in the Chiang Mai mountains:

"It’s one of quite a number of Japanese locos which were sent to Thailand during WW2, several of which survive today in preservation (all those numbered 7xx in the list on my website, 10 in Thailand, 2 have been repatriated to Japan). The most accessible one is that sitting on the platform at Bangkok main station."

No not yet. Last year I hired a ER6 from Mr Mechanic and road to CR. stayed at a place called My Dream guest house about 30k out of CR for 4 days. Did a trip to Mae sai and around the top north area.

Done a few day trips to Mae Rim on the twist & go but that's about it. Trying to get back soon but works **** and I'm a bit short on cash ATM.
