Chiang Mai in at number 10 for World's best Cities

Travel & Leisure have Chiang Mai in at no 10 for their World's best cities for 2013
Bangkok in top position and my beloved Cape Town at 4

So my home and second home are in the top 10.. Not too shabby

Well according to this list, Capers is number 4 in the most dangerous cities to live in.

To be honest I'm more inclined to believe these guys 5555

Yeah I know, I've got friends in CT. Just taking the piss.

Back to Chiang Mai though. Haven't been yet, but all the more reason to visit soon.

MTS went to Charleston soon after Hugo had passed through; drove up from Savannah where I was on business; enjoyed the day until a miniture horse I was petting, at the Cypress Gardens decided to stand on my foot.

    They asked 55555

For T+L’s 18th annual poll, we asked our discerning readers once again to cast their votes for the hotels, destinations, and companies that define the very best in travel. The result? One of our most robust lists to date, with new categories including top hotel brands and airports.

Smoke wasn't a problem this year and we've heard (1st hand) local communities are heeding advice on reducing burn-offs. So it may improve over time despite the topography.
    Cheers, Rob.

Very interesting list. Completely from a travel perspective, not the famous "World's Most Liveable Cities" list that gets so much attention every year. Travel is far different from liveability, as its far more subjective, and based on a stay of a few days or possibly weeks.

Wikipaedia shows all three of the most often referred to lists, and I've never seen a city in Thailand score in the top ten on those.

World's most livable cities - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Australian cities ... Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Perth ... and Canadian cities ... Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary ... dominate the big EIU list, with 7 in the top 10. Auckland, Sydney and Vienna make all 3 top 10 lists, while Vancouver, Melbourne, Helsinki, Munich, Zurich and Copenhagan make 2 of the 3.

Heard that before but the practice seems too far embedded into the SE Asain culture for their mindset to change very quickly.

Generally take these types of lists with a grain of salt but won't argue with Bangers at number 1. Went to Chiangmai about 8 years ago, loved it, will return again some day.

As vanguy says, the list is all about travel destinations, not about where to live.. If it comes off a major travel site it should have at least some creditability.
I had two daugters of friends come back to visit CT after being away for 12 years. (The youngest was only 10 when sh left) Plus the German BF of the eldest. They were all blown away and German boyfriend really loved the place.. There is just so much to do that you would need at the minimum a week just to scratch the surface..
Now to me that should be a good indicator of how good a destination is...

^ i spent 3 months all up on about 4-5 different trips to CM before i decided to move here. Last 2 trips were a month at a time and i felt that there was a lot more things i could have done and a week or 2 like my first few trips was just not enough.

More than 2 years spent here now and still discovering new things all the time but mainly out in the National Parks, jungle and wilderness type areas....finding some new gems all the time but i know that type of activity doesn`t suit everyone.
Little chance of CM being invaded by the Russians for that same reason
