What is killing people in Chiang Mai?

Young French Tourist's Death No. 6 in Chiang Mai Link - Phuket Wan

THE revelation of a sixth death and the results of an investigation by Thailand's Department of Disease Control has shed new light on the series of mysterious fatalities in Chiang Mai.

The sixth death involved a Frenchwoman - one of two who fell sick, a media release from the department says. It highlighted the exceptional nature of a complaint that appears to have struck down six young women aged 23-33 between January 9 and February 4, killing three of them.
    .
These three deaths - the unnamed Frenchwoman, New Zealander Sarah Carter, 23, and American Mariam Soraya Vorster (Pandola), 33 - have been linked by the media to three other deaths, British pensioners George and Eileen Everitt, and Thai guide Waraporn Pungmahisiranon, 47.

From what I read, whilst in CM, all recent deaths occurred at the same Downtown hotel and may have been either deliberate, and indiscriminate, attacks against guests OR a result of pest/cleaning chemicals used. 3 deaths occurred only hours apart and in adjoining rooms yet Police labelled 2 as heart attacks and the other food poisoning.
    Cheers, Rob.

    echovirus apparently...

Heart Virus Killed Chiang Mai Tourist, Says Doctor - Phuket Wan

NEW ZEALAND embassy staff have been told that the death of young tourist Sarah Carter was caused by a highly infectious virus that triggered a fatal heart complaint, the NZ media is reporting.

The death of Ms Carter, 23, at a Chiang Mai hotel in February was one of five in the city within six weeks - four of them at the same hotel - that have yet to be fully explained.

The 'Dominion Post' today reported that tests carried out on Ms Carter showed she had echovirus - a highly contagious disease that can cause the heart condition myocarditis. ''The disease is linked to dirty, overcrowded conditions,'' the newspaper report said.

A Thai doctor, Pasakorn Akarasewi, met New Zealand embassy staff on Thursday night and passed on the report so far on Ms Carter's death, according to the NZ Press Association.

British pensioners George and Eileen Everitt, who died in the hotel just two weeks later, were reported to have shown signs associated with heart attacks, although it seemed unlikely that heart attacks had killed them both simultaneously.

The deaths of Waraporn Pungmahisiranon, 47, in the room next to Ms Carter the previous day and an American woman in similar circumstances at another Chiang Mai hotel in January have yet to be explained.

7 deaths in the same hotel is not coincidence, not a virus, it's MURDER!

I had 2 customers last week staying in the same hotel (Downtown Inn), on the top floor as well.
I told them to at least get onto a lower floor. lucky they did. We suspected it was
the aircon causing Leigonnairs but the rooms all have separate systems.
I am no-one in Australia and a VIP in Thailand. I pick the latter.

I have to wonder, if this isn't some wierd person trying to destroy the business so they can buy it cheaply.

You would expect, with the world publicity about the deaths, not many customers are staying there.

Is Downtown Inn going broke and on the market for sale? If so, I would be checking the new purchaser for a cover.

Ok, if itis food poisioning? how come only in this hotel??

If it is a virus, how come the staff haven't caught it??

It seems very specific, 2 rooms next to each other, etc.

Interesting findings here >http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/...carters-death/< seem to confirm early reports.

Interesting artilce Rob... how will the maid who did the spraying feel now I wonder? If she even knows... and have they stopped spraying in that hotel now?

Traces of chlorpyrifos, which is used to kill bedbugs but has been banned in other countries, have been found in samples that current affairs television show 60 Minutes had independently tested.

Carter, 23, died and her friends Emma Langlands and Amanda Eliason became gravely ill while on holiday in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

A United Nations scientist, Ron McDowall, said there was a strong likelihood Carter died from excessive exposure to the substance, which causes identical symptoms to those suffered by the trio as well as several other tourists who died after staying at the hotel.

The fact traces of chlorpyrifos were found three months after Carter's death and after the room was cleaned suggested there was a high concentration when she was staying there.

"I think she has been killed by an overzealous sprayer who's been acting on the instructions of the hotel owner to deal with bed bugs," McDowall said.

Even a slight mistake in the dosage of chlorpyrifos, which has been banned for indoor use in many countries, could be lethal, he said.

McDowall checked his theory with other experts from New Zealand and Italy, who supported his belief that Carter was killed by the chemical.

"Their reaction was that it's quite clear that it's chlorpyrifos poisoning... the symptoms are the same, the pathology is the same and the proxy indicates that the chemical was present in the room."

A Thailand police inspector said police were looking into the possibility the tourists were killed by over exposure to pest control chemicals.

Carter's father Richard Carter said it was "good to get an answer" about how his daughter died.

"It's still pretty horrific that they have such low standards that that can happen," he said.

Sarah Carter's mother, Anna Carter, said she hoped action would be taken so other tourists would not die.

    Chlorpyrifos (WIKIPEDIA)

    Health effects

Chlorpyrifos is an organophosphate, with potential for both acute toxicity at larger amounts and neurological effects in fetuses and children even at very small amounts.

For acute effects, the EPA classifies chlorpyrifos as Class II: moderately toxic. Recent research indicates that children exposed to chlorpyrifos while in the womb have an increased risk of delays in mental and motor development at age 3 and an increased occurrence of pervasive developmental disorders such as ADHD.[13] An earlier study demonstrated a correlation between prenatal chlorpyrifos exposure and lower weight and smaller head circumference at birth.[14]

A 2010 study found that each 10-fold increase in urinary concentration of organophosphate metabolites was associated with a 55% to 72% increase in the odds of ADHD in children.[15]

Studies have shown evidence of "deficits in Working Memory Index and Full-Scale IQ as a function of prenatal CPF exposure [as measured when the children reach] 7 years of age."[16]

Effects on marine life and bees

Chlorpyrifos is highly toxic to amphibians, and a recent study by the United States Geological Survey found that its main breakdown product in the environment, chlorpyrifos oxon, is even more toxic to these animals.[17]

The substance is very toxic for aquaculture (fish) and bees

That is really tragic. That so many had to die because of a misuse of bug spray. It will be interesting to see how the Thai authorities deal with this evidence now. Will charges be laid against the hotel. Certainly whoever did the actual spraying was simply operating under management orders, and likely was not even properly trained.
