Why don't you go stay in Chiang Dao? Around an hour or so outside of Chiang Mai and picturesque.

if you go in the dry season it can be hard to find anywhere picturesque.
Nov-Dec or rainy season no problem.
mae rim is not far outside CM and has some high end hotels. close to x centre, elephant, snake shows, tourist attractions etc and some outstanding dirt bike riding

They're all doing it a bit tough at the moment, may be good deals to be had.
Baan Canna Country Resort in Mae Rim gets excellent reviews but not expensive.
Cheers, Rob.
Lifes journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well-preserved body, but to skid in sideways totally worn out, shouting: holy s.h.i.t what a ride!
Thanks guys going rainy season in August so I will check out everything. Will pass on animal shows don't like that rather see them in the wild
aug is good.
theres also some atv stuff out at mae rim and white water not too far from there.

My dream guest house
Its 30kms out of chiang rai on the river. Can get there by road or get a long tail boat from CR. The owner Nun will take you on an experience you will never forget. Its 500tb a night very peaceful no mobile service.
If you can ride a motor bike its a nice ride from CM.
I have stayed a few times usually spend 3 or 4 nights.
If you go get Nun to take you elephant trekking up to the Arkar tribe even spend a night in the Arkar village. I think Num has a GF in that village he loves going there 55

you can add this hotel to the list in case others are looking Katiliya Mountain Resort & Spa (Chiang Rai Province, Thailand - Mae Chan) - Resort Reviews - TripAdvisor
Looks incredible in Chiang rai the only problem is its chiang rai which does not have as much to do as Chiang mai (or am i wrong).
My dream guest house is a bit to far out there ozzy for me but looks a cool place.

This place is really good, great rooms and swimming pools.
Its a fair bit north of CR closer to Mae Sai. You really need your own transport as its remote.
This place is good for exploring Mae Fa Luang, golden triangle,Doi Tung.Doi Mae Salong.
I have stayed there twice ( on cheap specials). Its usually pretty expensive.
Hi Ian ....That was this place the Istana its a 4* Moroccan Fantasy.
A bit out of the way for most CM stuff.but great Gym and pool
when did you stay there last yes the reviews have been very mixed with quite a few commenting a lack of maintenance and being allowed to fall apart
last time about 2 years ago,Its a big place must take huge upkeep and it never seems busy.
maybe they are running out of money, they would need an army of cleaners and gardeners.
Everything looked really good when I was there, clean and in good nick.
Seems to be a problem all over the siripanna I spent a night in is also getting bad reviews because of lack of upkeep and maitance. well I am about to compromise so its either a nice hotel in the city of Chiang Mai or a few hotels I have found in Chiang rai.
Panviman Chiang Mai Spa Resort - Panviman Group of Resorts, Chiang Mai, Thailand ? Magical Retreat (Hotel Official Website) £67 a night on travel republic deposit paid fingers crossed all goes smoothly now
