I never refer to myself as either...If I have to explain myself to a Thai its usually "Pohm mee baan nee Samui".....(I have a house in Samui)....or "Pohm aa-sai yuu thee nee"...(I live here)

As Needed said......who would really care or think about it much.
But I guess with not being able to have any real "landed" status you can't really say your an immigrant
I take that as someone who is integrating into the country(well, that's the purpose but we know many don't integrate)

And expat, to me, is your term for being away from your country

My visa for Thailand is Non-Imm, therefore only Ex-pat applies.

I must say that for me the word "Expat" has a temporary feel to it.
ie living and or working away from their home country for a reason, which if not for that they would gladly return to it.

"Immigrant", one who has migrated from their home country for compelling reasons on a permanent basis, usually taking immediate family with them and having no wish to return.

A migrant who at the same time had no legal "Right to reside" in their chosen country on a "Permanent" basis could still be called an "Immigrant", albeit a legal or illegal one if they have cut everyday ties with their home country simply because they have no desire to ever return home unless they were forced to by events or circumstances beyond their control.

Like most things there are degrees under either description.
What you call yourself may not accord with others opinions.

Only a minute % are here on other than "Non-Immigrant Visas" (or Extensions based on one).

So Immigrant isn't an appropriate term.

Au asks me if I want to retire in LOS.

I say yes, but I think in reality we will transfer between NZ and LOS until i am unable to make decisions and she can take responsibility for the 3 of us.

Ex-pat isn't a term I would ever see myself as. Immigrant would be more appropriate from my outlook if I was to permanently reside in LOS. That however doesn't seem likely under the present Regulations although I haven't really looked at what is required.
