Ask An Expat - Questions that they can help with

Hope this topic can be on going with questions that BM Expats can help out with.

When TG's come to visit they find things here that they like and want to take back with them, and I get asked the question "can I take some home with me? ". Usually my response is can you get at Big C or Tesco or similar, or can we look up on the Net somewhere to see. So far batting about 0/6 so thought maybe experience BM's can help out.

    1. TG loves Canned Spaghetti (ie Heinz), and also Prunes (as required for a little back up problem 555). Are these available in LOS ?

    2. Are you allowed to take Canned Spaghetti back in your luggage?

Just a couple of questions to kick it off, I have a few more later to ask.

You can definitely buy the spaghetti here mate , I saw it for sale in Big C in Phuket Town last week.

I dont know about the prunes.

Virtually everything legal can be brought into here ....just think of this as part of one big landmass covering India and China and going all the way to France. Any disease around has easily travelled from one end to the other while Aus has been cut off and needs lots of quarantines and special rules.

BTW .... taking food with them is almost a Thai tradition and transgresses the practical.

I have had to put up with this since I moved here , finding the same food at the markets at the town I brought them to.
The tgs answer is that what we dragged half way across the country tastes better , and is even 5 or 10 baht a kilo cheaper!
    I dont even comment anymore...

When went to UK back in 80's(when in glass jars) took 3 big jars of Vegemite with me in my bag. One broke on the way there, I was shattered like the glass

Vegemite is available at The Deli in Patong (Ratty 2 Tits Rd).
    Bloody expensive (3x at least).

But it is a drinker's essential - Vitamin B complex, Niacin, Riboflavin which help with liver repair.

TBH is not cheap here either, middle size jar about $5.50, big jar ( 700 or 800 gm ) $7.90 or 240 baht roughly

    IIRC I paid 570 baht for a medium (250 gm?) jar - $19
I'm sure Sum Wun can correct this.

Vegemite available in Chalong as well at Villa Mart.
Dunno the cost as I dont eat it.

The thing is , the availability of specialist products has gone from very few to a lot in the near 5 years Ive lived here.

BUT , we expats who are responding live where there is a market for these products.
Yesterday I bought a small pack of Weetbix for 120 baht ...4 Oz dollars seemed reasonable.
I would guess that in large cities like Korat or Khon Kien with very small expat populations these sort of things would be very hard to find , let alone a villiage 50ks out of Udon.
In a good size city like Nakhon Sri Tammerat , 35ks from the gfs baan , I cant even buy a Nescafe to drink now, and have to drink muddy South Thai coffee.
I look for Malls or new Super petrol stations. These seem to bring at least one or 2 outlets at least , that sell western style stuff , whether it be a Kentucky Fried , Maccas , Dunkin Donuts or a Thai cafe that sells Lattes etc.
But a Tesco Lotus in Pang Nga is a very diffferent animal , to one in Patong.
