    Malaysia Airlines MH370 Lost

Malaysia Airlines says it has lost contact with a plane travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, with 239 people on board.

The airline said in a statement that flight MH370 disappeared at 02:40 local time on Saturday (18:40 GMT on Friday).

It was expected to land in Beijing at 06:30 (22:30 GMT).

"Malaysia Airlines is currently working with the authorities who have activated their search and rescue team to locate the aircraft," the carrier said.

The Boeing B777-200 aircraft was carrying 227 passengers, including two children, and 12 crew members.

It went missing two hours after taking off from Kuala Lumpur.

The airline has told the BBC it will be holding a press conference later on Saturday.

May have gone down in South China Sea off Vietnam. If so, one would expect wreckage to be sighted as it's a busy air route and visibility good. Would be only the 4th total 777 loss in 20 years.
    Cheers, Rob.

Someone from the China Embassy has just announced that the plane has made 'a landing' in Southern China. No more details yet.

    ****EDIT****

That was Al Jazeera news but BBC now saying that radar contact was lost in Vietnam airspace and the plane did not enter China or contact China air traffic control.

I think the AJ news came from Twitter ... not exactly reliable &&& but let's hope. One would expect a total loss of comms and to initiate a return to KUL or the nearest airport eg: Kuching or Saigon. The ELT should have been activated.

There's a Gulfstream and Bombardier flying odd routing in Sth China Sea not far off Saigon ... possible SAR aircraft. The latter belongs to MY Gov't.
    Cheers, Rob.

Where do you get that information Rob ?. I am looking at radar 24 but it doesn't show those aircraft.

11AM news here in Perth has just stated that Malaysian Air is contacting all next of kin of the passengers, so I think they have given up hope of finding any survivors

There is also some info in this story that the plane that is missing had been previously involved in another accident
Malaysia Airlines plane missing with 227 passengers on board

How the hell does a whole plane go missing in this day and age? Planes constantly broadcast their call sign, and are at all times tracked by GPS and all movement recorded in databases. At the very least, the location of the last broadcast should be known. This is like some sort of Bermuda Triangle crap.
Not one shred of evidence supports the notion that life is serious.

They are reporting that the next of kin of the passengers and crew are being contacted so maybe they want to tell them first before letting the media release any news.
