    Nah.. They don't..

Show a BG a map of Thailand and ask where their home is.. They will go looking and searching, not put their finger where they are born...

    Funny anecdote with a BG..
A year after I had spent a few days with her she was in England..
Her English BF sent me an E-mail, inviting me for a visit...
Told him he was a good guy, and was flattered with the invitation, but I was living in Holland...555

    Hi Sid

They certainly don't know where Scotland is,although they have heard of whiskey.

i was in a bar a few weeks ago and somebody was explaining to an American that Ireland was not joined to England,
That it was separated by the Irish Sea,He thought the guy was joking with him.

So I guess its not just Thai's.

I think most TG's especially BG's, feel the rest of the world is just past Cambodia. A bit too far to think about.

They do know the difference between nationalities, accents etc but that just lets them put us in boxes in their head.
i have had them think I'm from Austria ( very cold your country) 55555

They have no understanding of the distances, that's why they think we should be able to come visit them every couple of months. No understanding of sitting on a plane traveling at 600kph for 10-20hrs.

The fun comes when you bring one home, Here in Aust. they find it hard to comprehend how unpopulated we are and why it takes so long to get between places.

When I bought Jeab over, I did it in two steps, stayed over in KL for a couple of days, then KL to GC was a night flight and I gave her a sleeping pill, she woke about 1 hr before we landed so to her it wasn't far but when she went home it was a morning flight and she was awake for the lot, then a 3hr layover in KL before flight to BKK. She had chastised me for booking a motel for her close to swampy, she expected to just get off the plane and go get a bus for 4 hrs to Korat. Guess who was a very exhausted girl and very grateful of having had a bed to sleep in before facing the bus trip 555555

When we flew GC to T'ville, a 1.5hr flight up the Qld coast, she was in the window seat and could see all the land empty, out to the western horizon. Every 15-20 min's she turned to me and asked "Still Australia??" 5555
I showed her a map of Aust. when we got home, and the 2 inches that our flight had covered, she just laughed and went off to cook, no real comprehension.
"Of course you love me darling, I handsome man 55555"

I had to laugh at this topic because it is so true for the majority of Thai people that I've met. For whatever reason, the education system in Thailand DOES NOT TEACH GEOGRAPHY!

The majority of Thais do not understand the concept of a map. They can not point out where they live on a Thai map written in Tha. This was really amazing to me when I first discovered it about 18 years ago. I would draw an accurate map of where I wanted to go, and show it to a taxi driver, and he didn't know what it meant. But, I could mention some temple or hotel and he could find it easily. Thais are quite comfortable taking 17 hour bus rides and arrive at their destination.

I've known more than a few Americans who did not know the difference... and they SUPPOSEDLY had been properly educated. Some thought Canadians still lived in igloos.

And lions still roam the streets of Joburg, not just Thais with a distinct lack of geographical knowledge 5555
Had a friend who was recently hosting a European guest on a buisness visit. The guy mailed him to ask if he needed to bring loads of cash as he had heard that there were no ATM's here..

A guy goes where the money is. And, when you have money then the dames are not far behind.

My sister in New York used to introduce me as her Crocodile Dundee brother because we were cut from the same mold.

In the reception area of our salon/guesthouse I put large maps of the world and Thailand.
    Very educational for all.

I would really have thought that most would know where Australia,USA,England,France etc would be as those are the tourists they would most encounter.Strange how they get to grips with the different accents too though.
