    may day

just wondered how many people celebrate May Day...not sure how it works in your country's but all the shops will be open today..so the workers will be working on workers day 55555...its only industry that close's down...

may day always brings up an image of army parades in russia...tanks and missiles been paraded while thousands of troops goose stepped in front of the old generals...think it was to try an make the west scared...think it had the opposite affect....

was the opposite in New York..parades of construction workers with hard hats waving american flags and enjoying the day...big contrast imo

here in saffa...most people will be glad its a long weekend and not know what day it is..apart from the unions and the saffa commi party..they will have poorly attended rally's(most people will be bused in on the promise of a free t shirt and a meal) and the banners will be up "forward to socialism" ect and then the leaders will get into there fancy merc's and go home 55555

I am sure in the UK they do, but as far as I know in Australia they do not. We do have a holiday called Labour Day but cannot remember when that is as it is on different days in some states

Everyone dresses up here in England and Morris dances in the street... Monday is a Bank Holiday.

My only experience was in a pie making factory managing the gravy team

People that dress up like that and danced around in the town centres always worried me in England, but everyone to their own I suppose.

May Day wouldn'tmake sense here though, since we have it in March.
Not one shred of evidence supports the notion that life is serious.

"Labour day" In Australia pre-dates "International Workers Day" by a long chalk having been based on events there in 1856...

If anything It should be celebrated on 21st April each year but every state and territory is now different.

Labour Day is a public holiday celebrating the achievement of the 8-hour day in the late 1850s. The Stonemasons who believed in eight hours labour, eight hours recreation and eight hours rest, spearheaded the movement: - After a long battle, the unions eventually achieved their aim and held parades to celebrate their victory.

Around Australia the movement pushed for the attainment of this ideal and other trades were invited to participate in the celebrations. The first parade was held in Melbourne on 21 April 1856. Before this time, workers were required to work 10 to 12 hour days, six days a week.

The five-day 40-hour week was achieved almost a century later in 1948. Today the Labour Day march is a celebration of organised labour's achievements on behalf of the worker.

    "International Workers Day"
Was started on 14th July 1889 by something called the "Second International" a socialist organization based in Paris which pre-dated communism as we now know it.
It was designed to commemorate the "Haymarket (Affair) Massacre" in Chicago.

"No single event has influenced the history of labor in Illinois, the United States, and even the world, more than the Chicago Haymarket Affair. It began with a rally on May 4, 1886, but the consequences are still being felt today. Although the rally is included in American history textbooks, very few present the event accurately or point out its significance," according to labor studies professor William J. Adelman.

States and dependencies colored by observance of International Workers' Day or a different variant of May Day or Labour Day:

Dark Blue Labour Day falls or may fall on 1 May
Light Blue Another public holiday on 1 May
Pink No public holiday on 1 May, but Labour Day on a different date
Red No public holiday on 1 May and no Labour Day
