    the rest of your country

i got to wondering the other day(as i often do when im driving)....how connected you feel to the rest of the country...and this only applies to those of us that live in big country's

as most of you know i live in Cape Town yet when i visit Joberg ..i almost feel like im in another country..a stranger...i seem to have very little in common with them..

if you live in LA ..how close to do feel to people in NY or Perth to Adelaide ect

had some friends down from joberg this week and they commented on how different things were down here

Interesting that 1300kms is considered big for you, To Australians its pretty small, the example you gave of Australia is double that distance and most in the east of Australia would consider Perth and Adelaide close.

Australia is pretty similar and boring because of the similarities, but those from the north like to say "hey" a lot 555. So its a little different and New Zealand our red hair bastard cousins are closer to the east coast then Perth is, and they like to say "sweet" and "cuz" a lot and use to like to live around Bondi so they could feel close to their home

Considering Thailand as an example, my closest international airport is in another country (2hrs verse 5/6hrs to Bangkok) and Vietnam is closer then Phuket. Chiang Mai is about 900kms away.

So to answer your question, in Australia very much, in Thailand go 200kms and its almost a completely different culture/country.

There are many subtle and not so subtle differences between all Australian cities(same with everywhere I suppose). I love northern cities like Cairns and Darwin. Very chilled places. I wouldn't mind living in Darwin, but I'd be too far from friends and family. It'd put me a helluvalot closer to LoS though 55.

As for connection, we live in the most isolated city in the world. There ain't no connection to anyone, and that's how we like it! 55

I think likewise most on the east coast don't even think about Perth, out of sight out of mind sort of thing.

People here feel disconnected from people just a few miles away... War of the Roses and all that... 55

Europe has so much variety over short distances...

Small correction Bacon - Perth is the most isolated Capital city in the world.
I lived for 12 years in the City of Kalgoorlie - 600 km East of Perth and on the edge of the Western deserts.
That's isolated - 400 km to go for a swim.
Good spot for a spillage though 555!

Western Australia is a place known only to Western Australians.
People in Sydney or Melbourne don't even acknowledge our existence.
So we just refer to the whole lot of them as "Eastern Staters".
Bit like Tasmania. When we draw a map of our country we just forget to draw it in just to piss them off....555

It's a very pleasant and comfortable trip.
Take the train there and fly back.
Be ready to have a drink or 20 .

Bacon has been there recently for Diggers and Dealers and wrote of some decent eating places.
There's probably even Thai food now with the number of Thai brides that were being imported!

I love that America is so different in pretty much every state, it gives you such a different feel.

I'm off on a 2 week business trip next week, Texas(Dallas,Austin), Minnesota, Washington DC and Chicago.........all vastly different

And although very different cultures I never feel like a stranger.....
We Americans have our faults........but we are pretty friendly people so you feel welcomed in most places you go
