    50/50 Raffle

I'm sure every country has these??

In North America you go to a conference event and they do a raffle with 50% of sales goes to charity.

But it NA when you win at a conference they pressure you to donate back

    What's your take

    You buy 50/50 ticket

You donate your 50% winning back
Or you keep your 50% share

Never heard of it here. Can't see the point if they force you to donate your winnings back as well...

Closest thing we have is the local independent hospice does a Million pound lottery every year , 7000 tickets at 300 each , 1.3m in prizes and 800,000 "profit" towards the running costs

Yeah we have a lot of those also
And that's the thing, those ones and the ones at the hockey games you get to keep.your half

So I won it yesterday and my share was 3kusd

It was funny because I had been talking to eveyeone that if I win I take the money
And I was serious because I'd rather they just ask me to donate money(I bought 6 tickets for 100) than have me play a lottery and then push for me to give the money back

So when I won people thought I'd cave and give it back but I didn't
I said I was keeping it
    I explained my reasoning

Honestly some people made it a bit awkward but I didn't care

Just was wondering what others thought

I agree seems underhanded to have a lottery then pressure the winners into donating thier winnings ... should just ask for donations and be honest about it ..

Next year when I come and they ask me to buy tickets I am just going to give 500usd and tell them I don't want the tickets to prove a point

Also I think if they make it known they want people go keep it if they win people would buy more tickets

Most people were buying 100 dollars worth because I think they figure that is how much they willing to give away knowing taking the winnings is discouraged

But if they made it known you keep the winnings people would likely buy more 200-300usd because then they have a chance and if don't win they don't mind they spent more

    It's a win all around

And believe me, others came up to me after saying they wish they had the balls to keep it like I did

I'm not sure why they run a raffle? Why not just take donations? Sounds like a "How awkward can we make everyone feel?" charity day...

Yup and now I am going to pursue it out of principle

When they called my # I said I was going to take it
The lady who runs the conference made such a awful face and sort of caused a scene

Now I just found out she lied to me last night
I asked her what do I do about the 50/50 and she told me to talk to the guy in charge
Texted him this morning and he said she handles that

So now they put me in a position that I look stupid chasing it but now I am pissed and will make them pay me

I've run it twice and made sure people knew they wouldn't be pressured to donate it back

And my theory is when you do that people spend more on tickets because then they feel they have a chance of winning
But if they know they have to give it back they only spend 50/100usd
But if they thought they might be able to win they'd spend 200/300usd and if they lost they don't care that money went to charity

^Well exactly... the whole donate it back idea is poor business... no one wins.. not the charity or the winner!

It is insane that they held a raffle and even if most people donate it back
That they are fighting with the winner if they prefer not to

It should be a "silent" raffle . When you buy the Tickets you only give your phone number and they tex message the winner after the draw .

Self righteous cnuts. I would have done the same. 90% of charities are scams anyway.
Not one shred of evidence supports the notion that life is serious.

So they basically told me to fxuk off 555

    It really is amazing

I will push it to an extent but I also have to be aware of how I come off in all of this

It's 2800usd and if one of my clients thinks I am being a dick and pulls business that's worth x times more than the 2800usd

    I will tell you
Next year I will plop 1k down and tell them I don't want tickets just donating to prove my point

A lot of football clubs are doing something similar. Basically raffling a house and the tickets are a grand each. Sell 300 and the house is bought for 200k making 100k profit. I literally never win at charities. My 9 year old nephew wins ever one. It’s a running joke at this stage.

Also it is becoming common for raffling cars (second hand ones) where people pay 100 andpick a lotto number. It goes live when every number is sold (42) and the winner is the bonus ball.

My dad when he was an accountant had a client who was a charity for a stroke foundation. Biggest scam ever. Cro got 99% of all donations.
