    Where to stay in Singapore?

I am planning on spending 3 days 2 nights in Singapore when returning from LOS in July.
Previously I have only spent 12 hours in the country where I saw 'the eye' and Santosa, very briefly.

I have accepted that the accomodation will not be cheap like LOS. From what i understand due to the small amount of time in the country i'd want to stay in the Clarke Quay area?
Does anyone have an recommendations or am i best just do go with something large like the Novotel Singapore @ $174/night or Swissotel Merchant Court Hotel at $194/night.
Hotel 81 chain offer rooms at $45/night but don't have the greatest reviews.

Any assistance with accomodation and what to do in the small amount of time would be appreciated - Rivo and NamTanMot appear to be the last ones in the country

Tristar hotel out in Geylang area .... Cheap by Singapore prices....Have stayed here a couple of times in the last decade ... cheapest hotel in Singapore that I could find with a pool ... it is okay ... lots of good places to eat in the area and I guess what you would call the "real" Singapore as its in a somewhat locals residential part of town ...

Orchard Road area is like staying in Collins street in Melbourne...

If I'm overnighting alone I stay in one of the Fragrance hotels in Geylang. Small, grotty and cheap.
When in SIN with the missus for a few days I stayed at Ibis Bencoolen. Price wasn't too bad and it is about half way between Orchard Road and Little India.

Have stayed at the Ibis Bencoolen, and it is at the good end of ibis 3 star range. As an aside, the best ibis I have stayed at is in Hua Hin which is about 3 km south of the town centre. A little bit out of the way, but fairly new so in good condition, and good pool and food.

Orchard Hotel? is good, and at the top end of Orchard Road near the night life and bars if that is what you are after.

Grand Mercure Roxy is out of the way on East Coast - $10 cab into city, casino, Orchard, etc. Nice 4 star hotel similar to a Novotel. East coast is a long expanse of park land by the water...great for walking, running, etc. Opposite the hotel is a market and small shops. Feedback I had was cheap like BKK but better quality. $100 of shopping will buy a lot of good quality t-shirts, etc, and look after the masses back in LOS re gifts. Whereas, you will drop $100 on one item at most big brands on Orchard Road. Food is also cheap $3 for rice, meat and veg meal as you are eating with local workers.

Worth going to Marina Bay Sands Skypark Ku De Ta Bar - drinks are expensive so don't go thirsty, but probably works out same price as paying to get up onto the observation deck and presume much cheaper than the Singapore Flyer.

Are you travelling by yourself QS ?

If you are by yourself staying near Orchard Towers is a great idea if you are looking for company, you wont go lonely at this place on any evening.

If there is 2 of you I would seriously think of staying on Sentosa, its close to everything, even a Casino for you to back that longshot, you may even win. I stayed at Hardrock for the 2 night 3 day special, its $578 Aud for that at the moment, sounds expensive at $290 per night but this includes free entry to Universal Studios as well as the Express Pass for 2 people and you get free Monorail travel, if you intend to go to Universal I think its not bad value for Singapore, the Hotel is 4 Star and very very good IMO, just a tip if you do go there, go to eat the free Breakfast early or late, it gets busy around 8/9am.

What plans do you have for when you are in Singapore QS, if any ?

Won't be travelling alone. Ibis on Bencoolen is appealing or something in Clarke Quay.
No plans for now, just doing some reading and have been talking with a co worker who has been a few times.
Universal Studios sounds like it was a bundle of fun. Casino's are an option but will probably run out of time. Burswood is always here *Cha Ching*

Personally, I don't like the casinos in Asia. I don't smoke, and just walking through you get a lung full. And I don't understand the games, so it is just throwing money away. I like games where there is some skill involved eg poker.

Re Sentosa...I found it a rip off - $12 for 2 minutes on a segway and the nanny state of Singapore wouldn't even allow me to take photo! But for TG, it was a blast as it was all a new experience, so I enjoyed it nonetheless. Number 1 was a very tame luge...555...same as for Paer.

They can't be too strict about who they let in.

    I've never been stopped.
