    Malaysia

I will be in KL for about a week, and I'm thinking about exploring other parts of Malaysia for a week or two. Any suggestions on places and ways of getting around.

Also, how safe is it in the north close to Thailand, particularly for a TG.

Looking on the Australian travel advice site, Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat and Songkhla in southern Thailand is "do not travel" whereas there are no warnings for the Malaysian peninsula (exercise normal safety precautions). I assume that means if I head back to BKK or Phuket, I should fly to avoid Yala, etc.

    Cheers

Depends very much what type of holiday, how active you want to be, interests . . .

Burqa, beach and no beer. Bummer.

I like to get out of KL, a couple of days is enough, last year headed to Malacca/Melaka, easily accessible by bus, under two hours and a relaxed place for a couple of days. Buses leave from Bandar Tasik Selatan (BTS) station, 25min from KL Sentral.

Day trip (train) Pulau Ketam, ferry to island from Port Klang, about 7000 people live there, mostly Chinese - the website says there are only about 50 Malaysians, known for its crab/fish restaurants.

Half-day to Batu Caves - 25min train from KL Sentral

and have had a few trips to Penang. From KL, options of bus or train (rail to Butterworth, 10min walk to ferry to Penang). Bus is faster and it's quite slow rail trip through uninteresting countryside.

Fook On is a great name

Old Georgetown in Penang is supposed to be very good.

There is absolutely no problems in Songkla .... nor with the train or bus travelling from Malaysia through Pattani/Yala either. Thousands of people travel this route by land every day. Google it .

very family oriented and also very touristy, has water parks
she did say there was a big Thai disco there, if that interests you

it didn't sound like a place i'd be interested in, tourist trap

Thanks for all the feedback. Heading to Langkawi initially (flight cost $35 from KUL!) and I expect we will end up in Penang for a few days as we will probably fly Penang to BKK. Not sure what we will do in between.
