    Vietnam Suggestions ?

I've been thinking about my next trip to Thailand, probably my usual 3 x week stay in late July or early August, and for this trip im thinking of a side trip maybe to Vietnam. We have never been to Vietnam and I am interested in the Halong Bay Boat Trip. Ive been reading KR's trip report from a few years back and it looks great. I realize August is not the best time to visit weather wise, but some of the rain storms are magnificent to watch IMO and I cant get leave any later than August because of work.

I see Ozzy and Nomad have also been, no honeymoon suggestions thanks 555

So im thinking of going to Vietnam after 1 x week in CR, how long should I allow to do some sight seeing ?.....................will 6 x nights be long enough to see some interesting sites ?

Should we stay Hanoi for 2 x nights, boat trip 2 x nights and then Hanoi again for the last 2 x nights ?

    Any itinerary suggestions welcome.

Hi Gavan, IMO Hanoi would be a great place to visit in August. The AuCo 2 night cruise is something we'll do again as it's inexpensive and immensely relaxing with great food and a delightful crew.

NB: We saw only pristine clean waters of Halong Bay although a friend who just completed a cruise said there was lot's of pollution ... checking wind and currents I noted the southward drift from China and strong onshore (north easterly) winds which may have pushed garbage into the bay.

Itinerary-wise I would try to avoid a 2-way transfer Hanoi-Halong, and spend say 3 nights in Hanoi, do a cruise and then have a day/night in Haiphong - fly out of Haiphong to your next destination within Vn or to BKK.

    Hi Gav,

BM JDK (Jim) did it as well back in November/December last year.

It's in his trip report, he stayed on a Junk like cruse ship, smaller and it went out into the bay further than the others, read his TR and send him a PM.
He is a great guy and I'm sure he will give you all the info he has.
If he doesn't get back to your PM let me know I have his email and that would be the quickest contact, I don't know how often he logs onto here.

Hoi An seems to be many people's favorite. Halong bay is OK. Very similar to Phang Na bay.

Nice to watch storms but a bit frightening when the ol tub you're on starts taking water on 55

Enjoy but I'd seriously think about doing hoi an too.

with just 6 days and wanting to see Halong Bay and Hanoi, KR's advice above is good...

and as JC said JDK did a nice report on Halong Bay in his TR relatively recently as did KR going back a bit further

For mine, if you wanted to spend some of your time in Hoi An which is my favourite place in Vietnam it would be its own trip with Danang and perhaps Hue included in the 6 days...August is not a great tie for the Viet (east) coast..it is subject to a lot of typhoon and storm activity June through October

Halong Bay just do one night. We did two woukd have rather spent the extra time doing some other thing. Hanoi is a great place as well as Hoi ann.

But the high light of our trip was renting a bike and doing the Ho chi min trail. A really great ride and 300k over 2 days. IMO a better ride than any place in LOS

August being in typhoon season wouldn't deter me. Auco 1 and 2 are both late model steel ships and they always anchor up in sheltered locations.

Perhaps the best way to approach such a trip would be to NOT book in advance. It's low season anyway and some good deals will be available. Our Hanoi hotel could have sold us a cruise the day before, ideal if one wants to play things by ear.

Ash is probably more of a mountain man, more athletic, whereas Jo and I enjoyed every minute of our 3day 2night cruise for the relaxation, food, crew interaction, excursions and sheer enjoyment of being on the water ... on the receiving end of great service! We barely had time to scratch ourselves and it was all over.

Next trip for us may be December, high season, with Kiwi friends. We plan on CNX > HAN with 3 nights at Essence again. Transfer to Halong Bay for 2 night cruise. One night in Haiphong and return direct out of there to BKK for our guests last few days.
    Cheers, Rob.

Thanks for the replies and I do remember Jims TR with the excellent photos.

I think I might take KR's advice as far as itinerary goes, I looked on the Essence website and you can book bundles there, 2 x nights at Essence and then a 2 x night cruise in Halong Bay with all transfers including airports was US$450 each which is not bad value. With that bundle it returns you to Hanoi where we could book 1 x night and then fly back to Bangkok from there. Remember I enjoy roadtrips and seeing the countryside 555.

Ill give it some more thought over the next few weeks, I might have a mate and his wife joining us so that would be good.

Gav, I can't remember if it was mentioned here on TD or I read/heard about it elsewhere but the comment was that there are Chopper rides out to the Bay and they are spectacular, also alleviates the horror road the bus trip out there takes.

Could be worth looking at Chopper out there then only 1 trip back.

Can't imagine Paer on the back of a Chopper for 2 to 3 hours in monsoon rain with potholes you could lose a suitcase in ... almost as bad as visualising Gav sitting for hours on one of those wee stools at Beer Corner ... 55

[I think I'll be taking my own folding chair next time!]

Just adds US$2,000 or more one way .... 2 wheeled Chopper looking more economical
