    Cuba TR

Well it's my 5th day in Cuba
I'm now at an alley resort so although no wifo in the rooms they have it on the beach and public areas
Although you still have to buy it, which is bit ridiculous, IMO

    But oh well.
I'm loving Cuba and think I planned my trip out really well
3 days in Havana exploring the history and architecture and I need 20 days!!
2 days in Trinidad.....one of my favorite cities I've ever visited.
    Now 3 days un Varadero at a 5 star(in Cuba that's a 3.5 star) resort

I left 2 days open at the end

I will just give you my thoughts on each city I've been to with pictures

    Random Thoughts on Cuba

-Havana is amazing. The architecture is incredible. I couldn't imagine how beautiful it was in it's heyday

-Cuba is the hottest place I have been. The heat is overwhelming and put a bit of a damper on the holiday. It just zaps your energy and you have to constantly be aware of the sun.
It took me 4 days to find sunscreen to buy! And I looked and asked everywhere.
I went to the Havana beaches on my 3rd day
Stayed 100% under the umbrella that covered me 100% but the sun went right through it. I didn't realize because I was in the "shade" and felt good. I got sunburned worse than probably my whole adult life.
Thankfully I tan pretty good and was turning to a tan the next day

    - Some things are so cheap
    I've eaten local food for .50cent to 1usd(so 17baht and 35baht)
Beer is cheap as chips. In most restaurants a bottle of beer is 25baht

    -Music, music , music
That's the theme of this trip. It is a constant at all times. I love Latin music so I love it.

-Shortages.....so many things are just not available.
When you go to a restaurant you will order 3 or 4 things before they finally have it available

-Food.....I actual have liked the real local food.
Ropa Vieja is a shredded, spiced beef and fantastic
I've had grilled ham and cheese sandwiches for breakfast for 10baht that are very good.
Food in restaurants is ok. Not great but not horrible

    Havana

I stayed at a Casa Particular about 20mins walk to Old Havana
I picked that area because people online commented how touristy Old Havana was.
To be honest, sure there is a lot of tourists but it's also very local
Taxis are very expensive in Havana, they won't go anywhere for less than 10usd and if you are two people they will charge per person
So it really limits what you do in Havana unless you want to spend 100's of dollars in taxis
I walked back and forth to Old Havana from my Casa anour half the times and I still spent close to 100usd on taxis

My Casa was a mansion. And the owner was nice but a bit overbearing.
I enjoyed the experience but probably would not stay in a Casa that is someone's home again.
I just felt like a guest the whole time.
One other thing is the owner was a nice guy but very overbearing.
When I checked in he asked if I wanted to go see his friend's show at a club. He then maybe asked me 10 other times when I was pretty firm I didn't know what my plans were.
I also felt he didn't really care to help you with information unless he could arrange things and get a cut.
Even as simple as local transportation info.
I was disappointed in that but not a huge deal.

    Havana is an amazing city.
I could be there for 2 weeks and still not see everything I wanted to.
And the buildings and architecture are jaw dropping
But also the buildings where people live look like a bombed out Syria, in some cases.

The Cuban people are about the happiest people I've ever encountered.
Music is a constant 24/7 and you will see people just start dancing in the streets in the middle of the day.
I also love how they great each other. They are always kissing and hugging.

I did a couple fewer tours where you pay what you think at the end.
The 1st tour was my 2nd day and it was a Cuban Historical Tour.
To be honest the young guide wasn't that good but I did it more to meet people.
I met a great Irish couple, Koren and Fergis.
We also did the nightlife tour, which again, wasn't that great as a tour but had about 25 people and everyone was real fun.
Koren and Fergis were on that and we hung out with Abby, a 31yr old flight attendant from Taiwan.
Man was she cute as a button and fun as hell!
She was staying by my Casa but didn't really no where her Casa was so I took her home in my Casa and eventually we found it.
Honestly that was a tough one not being single 5555
She seemed into hanging out with me. She was very touchy all night.
But I did the right thing and dropped her off and went home and ate a bag of chips! 5555

One note about Asian female tourists here:
There is a bunch, eityer travelling alone or a group of 2 of them.
On this trip I've hung out and drank with 4 different Asian girls.
3 from Taiwan and one from South Korea.
And they really seem up for hooking up

So if I were a single guy like Supersub I would recommend coming down here

Great report and I love the pictures. You sure aren't going to be run over in the "traffic" like you might in Europe or the USA.

Ah to be "YOUNG" and single again, or I would put it on my list of places to spend more time.

Although I am basically the only single person right now in an all-inclusive resort

But my Brit friends(2 couples) are taking very good care of me 555
The 2 girls are great.....always making sure to include me(not that it's needed)

    Trinidad

After 3 days in Havana I took a shared taxi to Trinidad.
The bus is 6hrs20mins and the shared taxi was 4hrs
It's usually 30usd but there were only 2 of us and we didn't want to wait so each paid 45usd
They kind of screwed us by telling us they already had the passengers and we wouldn't have to wait.
    Oh well
The guy I shared it with was Dario, a 33yr old Lithuanian that lives in Norway.
What a great guy and we pretty much chatted the whole 4hr trip
This was his 2nd time to Cuba because the last time he got a 20yr old Cuban girl pregnant!!
So he was coming to see his daughter for the 1st time.
He was pretty clued in and just wanted to be part of his daughter's life but had no desire to be with the Cuban girl.
I hung out with them at the beach and the Cuban girl may have other plans 555

Trinidad is one of the best cities/towns I ever visited.
It's a small, colorful Colonial town with cobblestone streets.
It has a great mixture of local feel and good bars and restaurants.
It's on the backpacker trail a bit and one thing about them, is they attract good bars to be built.
Plus there is a very nice beach just 15mins away.
Tons of young female tourists in Trinidad.

The Casa I stayed in Trinidad was more set up like a small hotel so I was more comfortable in this Casa

Without a doubt this had been the trip where I have met and hung out with fellow travelers
Maybe because we don't have internet all the time so eveyeone is more open to chatting

But I met a great Irish couple
    A great Taiwanese girl
    Another 2 Taiwanese girls.
    A Korean girl
    2 separate British couples

The all-inclusive resort is sort of like high school
You meet people you like and then you do one thing with them 555

Well there is definitely large parts of Havana that have buildings that look they have been bombed
But even in those neighborhoods the streets are cleaned

I don't remember what TLH had said about Cuba

I'm watching a Cuba doc on Netflix and makes the country so more interesting
Can't get back to Havana to explore again my last 2 days

Every democrat should go to Cuba to see how communism screws a lovely people and country.

Worst country we have been to. It was 2005 admittedly, but people too scared to talk to us. Much much worse than Vietnam in late 80's.

Walk around Havana, not just the tourist crap, go to what's left of shops, see whats on sale, compare the prices with what locals are paid.

That looks a lot like some of the Mexican villages I visited with my second ex when we drove down there.

Nice report and pics. Looks like an interesting place. A friend went to Cuba last year and said there is a super nice beach not far from Havana. Not sure if you went there? Maybe I skimmed passed that bit.

Overall though, it's so far away from me it's unlikely I'd make a trip specifically to go there. Understandably if you lived in North America or Canada it would be more practical.

As Sid said it's a shorter flight 5555
All the people I met from England flew direct to Havana

Yes Playa Del Estes is the "Havana beaches " and there is a bus that takes you from the center of old Havana to the beach for 5usd return

    I went last Sunday
It is very nice, the water probably a bit more clear than most Thai beaches I've been to

I rented an umbrella because I couldn't find sunscreen to buy and the sun went right through the umbrella and I got really burnt!
Thankfully I tan very easy and it turned to a tan in 2 days
I also made sure I drank a ton of water and juice so not to get sun stroke

    Pics attached
