    Bon Island

    Anyone been ?

    Bon Island - Phuket 101

"Bon island (or Koh Bon) is located just south of Rawai Beach in Phuket and is just a short longtail boat ride away. The isle's coast is dotted by few sandy beaches and despite been so close to Phuket, it hasn't yet been invaded. Only two beaches on Koh Bon (yes in Thai island are 'Koh') are occupied, but only during daytime. One was the landing spot of the now closed Evason Resort Phuket, and the other is the culinary paradise of 'Dawn' a now well known English lady who made Phuket her home more than two decades ago.

Bon island might not be as impressive as Coral Island or Similan island, but it is so nearby, it's a fun hideaway for lunch and with the charm of the thatched roofed and wooden restaurant, it has a little 'castaway' feel to it. Of course you won't be alone on Koh Bon during the high season as no restaurant would survive with just a couple of guests. Just like some other travelers in search of a hidden spot will land here for lunch, often repeaters who fell in love with the place, plus a couple of speedboats stopping over for a quick lunch on their way to some other Phuket attractions. Once those speedboats are gone the beach is yours to play with: snorkeling, kayaking or just hang here watching yachts and sailing boats passing by with a Singha Beer or a freshly opened coconut in hand.

Apparently Dawn lives a life most of us would see as heaven of earth: a small white sandy beach with palm trees swaying in the summer breeze and little clouds gently drifting in a intense blue sky. Living in a Phuket postcard. Everyday, enough customers make the effort of crossing the sea to enjoy her legendary pepper prawns (280 baht) or Tamarin prawns (also 280 Baht) and all seems to be idyllic and perfect.

But these are the good days, the life of an islander running a restaurant is not all fun and sun as Phuket does have a monsoon with nasty winds and heavy rains. Every single day she must bring everything back as no stock can remain on the island at night.

Now think about it, every day she has to go to the local fresh market in Phuket Town some 20 kilometers away to buy everything she 'might' need for travelers who 'might or might not come'… then drive all the way to Rawai Beach, load all this on a boat and disembark it on Bon Island… and so on, every single day. Living on a paradise can be a hell of a job! So if you are around Rawai Beach… cross the sea and have lunch at Dawn's, she is a great person to be around

The best way to get to Bon Island is to ride one of the longtail boat always standing-by on Rawai Beach. You just have to agree the price which usually starts at 1,000 Baht per person for a round trip and decreases with the amount of passengers. Note that you just pay the boat fare on the way back."

It's not the dive Island north of the simillians, south of koh surin tai. Koh Bon & Koh Tachai | Thailand's Andaman Dive Sites

The water is clearer on the west of Phuket, or further out in the bay, it's pretty turbid around Rawai beach and that island.

The Island it's talking about isn't so nice as they say- I go past it on dive charters to koh racha noi and yai, it has a lot of boats anchored up most times I look.

I would recommend going to Phi Phi or lanta instead, you can do a day trip to phi phi from Phuket town, depends on what you want to do, snorkelling and swimming is better there- also up at Naithon beach is better for clear water, problem is water treatment/sewerage is very ordinary in Thailand look at patongs creek/open sewer!

Freedom Beach was a good day out. Got a longtail boat from Patong. There were some other places they went to as well - friendship and banana beach. Both on west side as well I presume.

    What's Racha/Raya like?
