    The Money or the Bag

Selwyn Toogood walks into a Thai bar and pulls out a thousand baht note and asks, "who wants a lady drink"? Out of thin air - 4 good looking, and one cling on, materialize at his table.
Onto a good thing, Selwyn reaches into the folds of his clothing and pulls out 10,000 baht, "keep those drinks rolling" he exclaims.
    He is swamped.
    He has a good night.
As the drinks flow, our friend Selwyn, suddenly has the opportunity to kidnap one of the more evocative, pretty little things.

He does.... and Selwyn has reaped the rewards of his earlier investment.

And she is pretty, and Selwyn knows she is a LOT prettier than any girl he could get when back at home. Even when he buys champagne for all of the hip girls in the latest VIP bar back home.

Later things get serious. Selwyn's new friend likes his apartment, his car, motorbike and the fact that Selwyn wants to buy her an iphone 6. And clothes. He didn't even mind buying dinner and drinks for all of her friends... every 3rd day. He even bought along a couple of his friends looking for their own pretty Thai girl. He then bought a cow for the village and dropped some coin to build an upstairs extension on the family house.

Selwyn KNOWS forking out the money is a normality in Thailand.

He knows when he dates a pretty girl back home - it's going to cost coin. Maybe not as much up front. But he also knows that there is no community property in the event of divorce.

Back home - when the pretty girlfriend becomes a wife, and gravity takes effect and she's not so pretty anymore. And maybe she becomes all bitter and twisted for some unfathomable reason (and certainly not for anything Selwyn's done) then divorce can rear its ugly head. Most divorces aren't nice. And suddenly 50% of Selwyn's wealth is gone. Along with the house and the car.

In love, when it becomes war, there is always a financial cost. In the West it occurs post relationship. And it can cost a lot! Relationships cost money wherever they are in the world.

In Thailand, we pay up front. AND we can pay in small increments and pay more as the relationship develops. Love grows - alongside the cost.

Us Westerners groan about the money. About the Thai Girl obsession with it.

But if it's going to cost you anyway - either at the start or at the end. Then perhaps... just perhaps...the Thai Money model isn't so bad after all.

How can you not have all day?

Yeah Dupree - but in the West most of us get caught up in that. If you can get to 40 and not be married in the West your in the 0.5% crowd.

Am I correct in saying that if you live with a girl for 3 months in Australia (12 weeks) she has a claim on your assets? Even if your NOT married.

)Obviously you don't have to worry about that in North Korea....;-) )

0.5%? Me and most of my friends have never been married... That must be the 0.5% for the UK then... 555

    Maybe DP...maybe...

Still, can't help but think that a large element of travelers into LOS have been hit by the post-relationship Tax.

It is an old topic, but worthy of a reply. I've seen both sides of the story. I prefer the Thai one. After 70 odd years I've come to realize that the ONLY real reason for most men to get married is to have your own family. I wouldn't trade my two kids for anything and I'm now blessed with grandkids. However, I wouldn't take either of my ex wives back for any amount of money. In fact, I would not take ANY woman as a wife now, and it wouldn't matter how young, beautiful or wealthy she was. I value my freedom more and I don't have that many years left to enjoy them.

Anything and everything is in play, including your relative future earning capacity...not just assets.
