It's a long way from Chiang Mai to Perth

It all started back in May 2012,

I had just separated from my wife of 37 years. There was no one else involved and we had just drifted apart. I had moved into a small flat at the back of whereI worked and there was no television so I would surf the net at night. I was on my favourite site...airliners.net. when up popped an advertisement for thai lovelinks/cupid, I cant remember which one. I got quite a few hits, which surprised me, I was 57 years old and a bit overweight.

Ideally I was looking in the 40 to 45 age bracket, I wasn't worried about kids or skin colour. I just wanted someone in my life who cared for me. After a few nights I spotted a profile which grabbed my attention. She was from Chiang Mai , 34 years old (2 years older than my daughter) with 2 kids, a daughter 13 and a son 9. After reading her profile i thought what a lovely lady! So I sent her a message and said "I think you are too young for me, but you sound like a lovely lady and I hope you find someone nice." After some polite exchanges, we started talking to each other in skype.

In the early calls we were both sussing each other out. I was asking about her parents, brothers, sick farm animals and other important things. I was well versed in the way's of wiley thai ladies, having been to Thailand several times and had been an avid follower of phuket_info. She was being cautious with me as she had many scammers trying to get money from her over the internet.

When we first started chatting he was working as a Personal Assistant to an Insurance sales agent. She had worked for her for about 3 years and was earning 12,000 baht per month. Low salary, but she had flexibility to take the kids to and from school. She also worked part time doing some garment work.

The more I got to know about her the stronger my feeling were. I'd found out that both her parents had passed away. She had an older brother (Real brother, I've seen the family photo's.) And he has a job and lives in the family home in Fang, just over two hours north of Chiang Mai.

I thought i had every base covered but I couldn't follow her finances. She had an old car which cost her 5000 baht per month, rent was 5000 baht per month plus fuel plus food, etc all on around 15000 baht per month. It wasn't to be for about 5 months before I found out how she was surviving.

    THE FIRST MEETING

In August 2012 I was going to Bangkok for some dental work. I asked Anne if she would like to meet me there and she said yes.

To be continued. (Its getting late)

    First Face to Face meeting.

I left Perth Friday evening arriving in Singapore around 3am with Tiger Airways. The connecting flight to Bangkok was about 7am so I grabbed a few hours sleep on a bench seat of one of the closed restaurants. It was quite comfortable. I had arranged Anne's flight so that she arrived in bkk about 30 minutes before me. My flight was about 20 minutes late but I had only carry on luggage and cleared customs quickly. (A rarity these days) . I eventually found her and as I walked towards her I thought "you idiot Mark, you haven't bought her anything, not even a jar of vegemite." She looked beautiful and had the nicest smile.

The first meeting felt a little awkward but after a few minutes, things were fine. We grabbed a cab into The Ramada Riverside where we were staying. Quite a nice hotel, I've stayed there a few times over the years. After a quick check in we dropped our gear in the room and it was off to the dentist. She couldn't belive I would fly from Perth to Bangkok to go to the dentist but when I explained to her how much dental implants were in Australia she understood.

After the dentist we had some lunch and gees, can she eat! It was good luck our dinner was a buffet as I had booked us on one of the dinner cruises on the Chao Prya river. Wanting to fill in some time after lunch I found out that she had been to Bkk a couple of times with her company but not seen very much, so I became her tourist guide, jumping on of the river boats and took her to the grand Palace and the reclining buddha. Then back to the hotel for a quick swim, she had a very modest two piece swimsuit but. Then back to the room for a few zzzzz's. After showering and geting ready Anne came out of the bathroom and looked beautiful. I felt like I had won the lottery, but in the back of my head were all the stories and scams I had heard about on various websites. I wasn't going to let my guard down.

We arrived at the wharf where the dinner cruise boats left from and it was a bit like where the speedboats leave from Chalong Bay to Phi Phi island. Hundreds of people and typical organised Thai kaos. It was interesting seeing the disgusted stares of old foreign women and the approving smile of their partners as they looked us up and down. We were shown to our table outside at the bow of the ship. It was a typical balmy Bangkok night and we had a great night learning more about each other in a few hours than we had in the previous 4 months of phone and skype calls. You should have seen her eat! The food could be described as average at best, but it was a great evening. We cabbed it back to the hotel, had a couple of nightcaps in the bar and off to bed.

I had a 9.30 departure from swampy on the Sunday, getting me back to Perth about midnight on Sunday night. So it was up early for a cab ride to the airport with an affectionate goodbye before we went our separate ways, vowing to meet again as soon as I could arrange it.

On the way back from Bangkok to Singapore I went over the last 48 hours in my head. It had been great, I met a beautiful young lady, enjoyed her company and felt like a million dollars. I was still on my guard but I was still wondering how does she suppott herself on 15,000 baht per month.

I'll post some pictures when I work out how to do it.

Thanks Crispy and Bacon. Yes we are lucky in Perth. The best return fare I had in the past is just over 10,000 baht to Chiang Mai where Anne lived and 3,000 one way to Singapore.

There's a lot to come and I hope it helps those that are in the early stages of relationships or thinking about it. I hope to cover everything from Tourist visas, prospective marriage and Pr applications, kids schooling and more.

I do Perth to KL to CNX with Air asia. Best price was $340 return most I have paid was just over $600. Air Asia do some good deals and its always best if you sign up as a member so you get the specisls.

Like the others have already said... an interesting read, Oldmanemu. I'm looking forward to more.

I've never done the dating scene on line anywhere, but many of my friends have. I don't even look because I don't WANT a permanent relationship. I enjoy women's company, but that is as far as it goes. In the past I've tried to help many women set up businesses on their own so they can make more than the average 10,000 baht a month. It used to be about 6000 baht a month, but like everything, costs have gone up. I've been going to Thailand for 20 years, so I know a "little" about the "game".

Oh, and Chiang Mai is where I spend most of the 5 months a year I spend in Thailand.

An interesting adventure OME, looking forward to reading more; you get a real insight into the member(s) of the board. Funny thing though, I love checking out other BM's but keep things fairly close to myself, (hypocritical,???). CM and the North is the pick of the place for me. Looking forward to reading more. First International Trip for Anne.

After getting back from our first meeting my head was in a bit of a spin. I had meet a lovely lady but I kept thinking about all the scams I had read about. Things kept rolling along with skype and phone calls. Then one Saturday I spoke to her and arranged to speak later in the day but when I called a male answered and hung up when I spoke. I kept calling but no answer, it had been switched off!. My scam alert radar had gone off full blast. She had told me in the morning that she was taking her kids to Doi Sutep and then up to the mountains with some friends. I kept trying the phone for several hours to no avail. About 7pm I eventually got a call from a thai number that I didnt recognise. It was Anne and she told me that her phone had been stolen from her bag and she had to wait to get home to call me. I was extremely suspicious but wanted to trust her.

She explained that she had 2 phones. One that her manager had given her for work purposes that had minimal credit and her own which was a cheapish Samsung ( wicch was stolen.). I still wasn't convinced but as I had arranged to meet her in Singapore in a few weeks time I let it slide. She didn't have a passport so I sent her some money ( via western union, man is that a rip off). It took me ages to explain to her how to collect it.

She got her passport and our trip to Singapore was booked. She flew CNX-BKK-SIN and I flew Per -Sin arriving within about 20 minutes of each other. It was her first time out of Thailand and she was shit scared going through immigration.

A quick cab ride into the city and we were in our hotel. I'd booked the Ibis Bencoolen. Clean and comfortable, I'd rate 3 star about $160 AUD Per night back in 2012. Up early the next morning to find a local noodle shop was the mission. While eating breakfast she looked at me seriouslt and said "darling, last night the taxi paang mak" I said " don't worry at least they use the meter here!" That day we did the touristy thing in Singapore and had dinner at the Newton Hawkers centre. A lot of people say that Newton is a tourist trap but I've never had a bad feed there. Anne loved it, she couldn't believe the seafood there. Have I mentioned that she eats a lot?

The subject of the phone had come up for a few weeks and on the Saturday she asked if she could use my phone to call the kids. I had brought my old iphone 4 with me with the intention of giving it to her. After she had finished talking she went to hand it back to me but I said keep it. She thought I was joking but then realised I was serious, I've never seen someone so happy to get a second hand phone.

We had such a good time that we met in Singapore again about 6 weeks later, taking in The Phantom of the Opera and a quick visit to the Casino. She wasn't impressed with the Casino as she doesn't like gambling (thats another box ticked). Parting at the airpirt after the second trip saw a few tears on both sides.

Next: my first trip to Chiang Mai to stay with Anne and meet the kids. I'll also have a go at uploading some photos

I've picked up some good fares. A lot of my trips have been long weekends, Easter and then a longer 7-10 days once a year and about 10 days at Christmas. I find Airasia give me the best flight times for long weekends. I work on Gt. Eastern Highway near the airport so I could shut up a bit early, get the 4.30 flight to Kl then early departure from KL and be in CNX by 8.30am Saturday. Similar coming back leave CNX ABOUT 4.30pm back in Perth 5.30am ready for work. Some of my longer trips i've found Thai less than $100 dearer than Airasia. Been lucky to also use my singapore airlines points to go business class.

Fang is about a 3 or 4 hour ride on my motorbike... depending on traffic. It is the former home of a friend of mine.

    TIME TO MEET THE KIDS

After one more trip to Singapore and one to Bkk. It was time to pop the question... can I come to Chiang Mai to see you next time? She went quiet then said "really?" " You want to stay hotel or my home? My home not nice." I said " i don't care, i want to stay in your home and meet your kids. A big smile enveloped her face and a huge hug followed. It was agreed!

There was aa Easter break coming up which also tied in with Anzac day so I booked my flights. This time I had to make sure I had some presents for the kids and being Easter it wasn't hard to arrange something.

In the intervening period a few interesting things came out. First thing, we were chatting one night and I could see the kids eating their dinner in the background. We had been chatting for a about a minute when I said to her to go and eat with the kids and we could talk later. She declined and we chatted for a few minutes. I called her about the same time the next night and the same thing happened. It was then that the penny dropped and I realised she was making sure the kids had enough to eat before she would eat what was left. I was now starting to get an understanding of how she was surviving.

A few nights before my trip to CM. We were on skype and i heard a nock at her door and some discussion in Thai. Anne came back after a few minutes and I could tell she was upset, it was the rent collector who had been at the door. As I was going to be there in a few days time I left it alone but the jigsaw puzzle was starting to come together.

I arrived in Chiang Mai about 8.30 in the morning and they were all there to meet me, daughter Seem 13 old and son Sam 9 old. The kids could speak just a few words of English and were a bit stand offish which was to be expected. Anne's home was in Mae Hia, a short drive from the airport. It was an older home with 2 bedrooms and bathrooms. A living room, dry kitchen and out the back was a sink with running water and a single gas burner. It wasn't flash but it was spotless and I was made to feel very welcome.

That night itold Anne to ask the kids what they wanted for dinner, she told me to ask them myself so I had a crack at it in my broken thai, PIZZA was the resounding repl, so off we went to Yummy Pizza, a few hundred metres fron Anne's home, and run by an Aussie.

Then it was time for bed. Her bed was the second most uncomfortable bed I have ever slept in. She called it her Adventure bed, it was high on the sides and low in the middle. If you tried to lie on the edges you would roll back to the centre.

The next day we all went shopping and I wanted to change some money. We went to K Bank and Had planned to Give Anne some money and while we were sitting there I could see her bank book, I asked if she would show me, she was reluctant to show me but eventually relented when I told her I wanted to pay her rent and car for that month. She had the princely sum of 142 BAHT in her account.

That night after dinner we sat down to prepare a budget. It turned out that she had been paying her rent and car alternate months rather than monthly. She pulled out her notebook where she had written down everything she had spent over the three previous years. She had run up a debt of just under 20,000 baht with friends and family which needed to be addressed as well. I agreed to bring her rent and car up to date and pay her outstanding debts as well as supplement her salary by 10,000 per month. It could afford it and it was good to see her eating with the kids.

At no time has she ever asked me for money or material goods.

You know ome the last few words of this section ring true with me as well ,i have known my fiancee for 6 years now it will be 7 shortly and she to has never asked me for anything ,not money or goods or anything .I always send her a rose on valentines day ,i send her a box from my family with presents on her birthday and at xmas ,it was funny the other night as her birthday has just gone she said to me "you never forget my birthday " i didnt tell her it is part of my access code to unlock my computer but i wouldnt forget anyway .
This is a really cool story mate to a thai 20,000 debt can seem huge but to us it isnt anything really and i bet she was so gratefull when you got it all sorted for her makes her life a lot better .I once sent her a 20.00 note as a gift because i didnt know what to get her ,do you know she kept it for 2 years because it was a present i told her to spend it and buy herself something nice funny girl .

Like the other guys here, I can see beyond the scammers who give all Thai women a bad name. There are lots of jewels who no fault of their own get left with kids and debt... and not many viable prospects for reasonable paying jobs.
