I have realized I have an addictive personality and at different stages in life have allowed that to nearly get the better. Whether that was cigarettes, alcohol, cocaine but the worst was roulette. The noise of the ball hitting off the metal ridges just gives me way more of a high than the best line of Colombian white or blowing my nut into a stunner. I can’t explain it. It has won and cost me a fortune. But I realized that it controls me so I don’t go into casinos. Strange because my dad runs the biggest one in Ireland.

I don’t get the same buzz from any other type of gambling. My dad was telling me that one of the regulars was up 4 mil on punto banko during the week. Similar to baccarat but then proceeded to lose 7 mil in space of 48 hours. I think gambling addiction is the worst. Alcoholics can only drink so much before passing out or a white addict can only sniff so much. But a gambler can keep going. My mother despises gambling and would have a heart attack if she knew what I used to do. Most I bet on one spin was 50k.

It was hilarious one night when my father started cursing and shouting he can’t believe it. I ran into the kitchen and asked him what’s wrong. He said he lost big on online poker. I was worried and asked how much. 8 fcucking euro. 555

I think I told the story of a layover in Amsterdam before a flight to Los. Having a beer I said I’d go into the casino for a bit. I had all my money for a month trip in cash. I bet 50!euro which quickly lost 3.5k. I only had 7 and made a decision that I could bet and win back or cut my losses and have a sh1t trip. I bet and luckily won. The trigger is 3 pints. Crazyvreally.

One night I went into a casino in Dublin with 300. In the space of a couple of hours I had in low teens in thousands in my pocket. They then started feeding me drink. One guy said to go home. Didn’t listen and left with just a taxi fare. Haven’t bet in over 2 years.

Similar to you, Notorius, I learned my lessons the hard way. Lucky for me it was when I was very young and finally vowed not to gamble any more. We had a big circus that came to town at the end of the summer and I would take my saved up allowance and try to beat all those stupid games were you win a stupid teddy bear. I didn't even want a teddy bear or what ever the prize was. It was always about trying to beat the system. Eventually it dawned on me that the game was always rigged no matter how much skill you had. I can't remember how old I was at the time (12 ?) when I said to myself..."No more, never again".

I later learned to play poker and could always beat the loggers, but when I came to the city and played against the "Big boys" I realized I was out of my league. I never really lost much, but I didn't win much either and gave it up. It was probably for the same reason why I was never any good at racing cars or motorbikes... I am by nature a bit too cautious. To win at racing or big stakes gambling you have to be a balls to the wall kind of person.

As a young lawyer and not earning much I used to supplement my income by doing Day security in my dads casino. Easier job ever and good money. I was positioned by the roulette table and used to make bets in my head. One day I was up to 300k with imaginary bets but the next I didn’t pick anything right. I saw how it can ruin people. The best customer was an elderly gentleman who came in and got me to put parking tickets on his Range Rover. He played black jacks and took all 6 boxes at 5k a box. He never cared if he won or lost just wanted to be around people. Used to tip us all 100 each as he was leaving. One Saturday he didn’t come in and transpired he put a shotgun in his mouth. He lost millions on Lehman’s and then his pig farm closed due to disease. His wife had terminal cancer and it all pushed him over the edge.

Another Chinese guy drove me to work in a taxi and he said he lost 8 restaurants over 3 years to blackjack and had to drive a taxi to feed his kids. My dad was telling me they always win. Eventually. But if outsiders come in it can hurt. A cruise ship docked and two Philippino croupiers came in and took the table for close to 3 mil. They left never to retune. Took over a month to recover. Regulars will always lose even if they have a streak but visitors can break them. One thing I admire about his place is they don’t serve alcohol where the other competitor does and will ply you with drink to make sure you lose.

One night I lost an entire months salary and I was numb to it. That’s a problem. I was in another casino in town and I had won over 15k. I said I was cashing out and the mood changed all of a sudden it was just Chinese guys who said they didn’t have the cash to pay. I was genuinely scared until one of the lady dealers told me not to worry. The boss came and gave me the cash. Next week I was refused entry. Luck I suppose.

One of the online sites in US had this offer for the College Football Championship

Sign up to the site, bet 5usd and if your team won they'd give you a 500 credit
That's 100 to 1 but they obviously covering some with the losing 5usd bet

But just tells you how stacked it is in their favor

To give that much away because they know they getting it back 10x

There is/was a system in roulette where you could always make money by betting the 50-50 (Black or Red, or Odd or Even). But it ONLY works if the balls go back and forth fairly evenly. You can actually win a bit even if your choice comes up wrong a few more times than it does right. However, If you get a long string of bad calls then you go too deeply in debt to recover.

Write down 5 numbers (1 2 3 4 5) and bet the first and last (1+5). If you lose then you add 6 to the list and bet again... only it is 7 this time. If you win with the 6, then you remove the 5 and the 1, and bet the 4 + the 2 (6 again). If you win then you last bet is the 3. But, if you lose the 3 you add another 3 and bet 6. This goes on until all numbers are cleared. It works, but not when you have a whole string of losses.

I waited until there was a run of 4 or 5 same colonies and then bet the other and doubled the money until I won. It was a good system until it goes to high. The minimum I bet is 50 euro. One time I had over 10k on the table. It was as if I was numb and only wanted to hear the noise of the ball. The craziest I did was play 5 tables at the same time.

I remember I left for a smoke and started chatting to a guy. The pit boss came out and asked was I happy to keep betting. Hadn’t a clue what he meant until he said I had left a 300 on 2 lines and a collie and had won several times while I was smoking. It was up to 2-3k and I hadn’t even realized. That’s bizarre to me but a lucky break.

Very often luck (good or bad) plays a big part in life, and it seems to run in cycles. I think I've mentioned this before, but I had a bit of good luck from others misfortune with the floods in Bangkok in 2011. I also missed some flooding at home on Vancouver Island. Instead of going to Thailand on the first of November like I usually do, I went to the Grand Cayman Islands on a fishing trip instead. It was just a lucky timing thing because I had a friend who wanted me to visit him for some tarpon and bone fishing. I had free accommodation and the airmiles to take the trip, so I booked for Thailand later in December.

In doing so I missed the floods that evacuated the hotel I always stay at. And the lesser floods near my home on Vancouver Island were cleared up by the time I got back. As an added bonus the floods in Bangkok saved me 56,000 baht. I wanted to purchase a 250 D-Tracker in Chiang Mai (155,000 baht) but there were none available. They were all stuck in Bangkok warehouses behind a flooded area.

Then, a local friend I knew here did some checking with people he knew and found a used 2010 D-Tracker for 99,000 baht in Doi Saket. It only had 2000 km on it and was basically brand new. I took one look and bought it on the spot for cash. It has run like a top ever since and I have close to 60,000 km on it.... all because of good luck for me.

There is only one bet in a casino that pays correct odds, no margin for the house....the odds bet behind a bet in Craps.

Every other bet on the board, in the casino has advantage to the house, some as high as 12%

I used to play 3 times a day in the Gold Coast Casino, I am like Notorious, an addict.

Craps and Blackjack are my games and like you, I have won large amounts, then lost 3 times as much the next visit, or I didn't get out with the win because I just love the bet, it is the fact you think of nothing else while punting, not thinking about the shitty things going on in life, you are just immersed in the gamble.

A good betting system is on Greyhounds...in any 10 plus race meeting the same box number usually comes up winner 3 times. So you wait till a box wins twice and then start betting and doubling your bet till it comes the 3rd time. The big pickup is if the 3rd time it is an outsider that wins and the odds are high but normally it is at 2 or 3 to 1 so you come out in front but not a killing.

When it hurts you is when you get 2,3 or 4 boxes that have won twice and you have to cover them all.

Have a look at your local greyhound race results and see what I mean, play a dummy bet and see how you would have gone.

Here is a link to ladbroks in Aust. races today to show what I am saying.

Could never get into betting... one bet a year is about my limit. I don't enjoy winning or losing... so find it pointless...

I find luck so unsatisfying... 55

DP you are lucky to be like that

I guess we all have different luck and in different ways, I for example, never got into smoking or drugs, so I consider myself lucky that way.

Not lucky with being a gambler. I guess some of us would see having a good long marriage or relationship with the right lady as being their lucky side.

I guess it is all relevant.

You are right... I have many other faults. Lucky that gambling isn't one of them. Probably because I see life as one big casino of dumb luck anyway.. 55

Lucky in health and love are probably the luckiest people...

    Emphasis on the "good" 555

I've known a lot of marriages that stuck together for many years, but neither partner was happy. My parents stayed married until they both passed away in their eighties, but I know for a fact they were not sleeping together for the last 20 years or more. They had separate bedrooms. My father was old school and never messed around with other ladies.

I enjoy betting on rugby..its the one game I love and its the one game that having a wee wager on makes it a little more "intense" for me...

Mind..I don't bet against "my" teams...The All Blacks and The Hurricanes...lesser so The Waratahs...if I don't think they will win or return what I think is a fair margin I don't place a bet

My favourite bets now are on a series..an accumulator..where you have to pick the winner of all the matches over the series and the bet rolls on until you lose one..or if you are lucky enough, win big

I used to bet on horse racing a little...but my rule was that it had to be a part of a day out at the races..so i had to be at the track

I've done plenty of boozing and recereationals in my day but the next morning when I wake up with a hangover the last thing I want to do is get back in the sadle...I like a good week or 2 off it if I can get it between even mild boozing sessions these days...weak as piss I know..555
