    Combination of places and my own input. Have been doing it for a while to help to learn. It is a bit of a game with us what I will call her for the week. Sometimes I get slapped .5555555

    I bet some of our Aussie nicknames sound funny to Thais...
    A bit like "Bum" "Phrik" or "Fukthong" would here..555

    it is funny when you start to unerstand what the words actually mean, but in the end you still have to think of it as a name, rather then what it means. You also get some people who get given Farand names as there nicknames. I know an Annie, Woody, Kate.. these were names given at birth by the parents

    Most Thai nicknames aren't very flattering, while the real names are usually quite auspicious. Apparently that is because the nickname is given, and used, to confuse any evil spirits lurking around looking for a the soul of a pretty kid to steal.

    Using farang words and names can serve the same purpose, while adding a bit more variety to the range of nicknames. A few years back someone from the Ministry of Culture expressed concern that non Thai nicknames were becoming too common.

    My wife's full name is Thongdao Gold Star. She is my shining light and teacher on many things non academic. Once I realised I deserved a gold star my life changed.

    I just get Honey... every now and again I have to ask her if she knows my name and I get "don't be ting tong" so I then have to ask "what is it then?" "you baa ting tong!"
