Funny, but with my 4th trip coming up, I am still trying to develop a real appreciation for Thai food. Khmer food knocked my socks off, but so far I have yet to be absolutely blown away by any Thai dishes. There are many that I like, but none that I love, or that I can't wait to dig into again. I think it might be like many things, and become an acquired taste.

Thai food is killing me. Went to Panthip last night, and walking past the usual vendors after crossing the khlong was hard enough, but then there was a vegetarian food festival, so a long line of additional vendors. The aroma was amazing, which is something I don't often say in BKK.

I love the way the green and red chillies are sticking out like spikes, warning you to eat carefully!! The whole dish looks amazing, and I've never seen that served at Kiss food. 555

I used to only eat the curries, which although are nice I find are too filling and I'm sure all that palm sugar and coconut milk isn't good. Last time I tried a lot of other thai food I wouldn't normally eat. Som tum, laab, kanom jean... was nice! 1 girl tried to get me to eat this dancing shrimp dish. No way in hell I will be touching that. The shrimp are alive and bouncing around on the plate!!!!!

I was just the opposite. I thought the Khmer food was ok and Thai food was rich and great. I guess it is to each their own. I was only in Cambodia for a few days too. May not have been eating at the right places either.

Its funny about that TMT, after that statement I did another 2 weeks in Cambodia, followed by 2 weeks up in Chiang Mai, and I did a complete reversal. The Khmer food just didn't do it for me that time, while in Chiang Mai I suddenly really came to love Thai food. I think the key during the Thailand portion of the trip was that I spent the entire time with a Thai girl who really loves food (don't they all), but who also had me trying many different dishes that she thought I would like ... things I would not normally order for myself. I won't even attempt to name any of the dishes I ate, but I was simply enjoying each meal more and more. A lot of the food we ate was street food, eaten on the side of the road, and not in the fancier restaurants with AC, and I think that had a lot to do with it as well.
