Thais who have accidentally lost their passport which contains their UK visa Thailand should never worry. Contrary to popular opinion, they do not need to submit a new visa application. They simply need to obtain a visa vignette to prove that their visa has been already issued.

What is a visa vignette?

A visa vignette does not replace the lost visa. Instead, this is documentary evidence that the individual concerned has successfully passed his or her visa application and that the passport was unintentionally lost.

It must be also remembered that the vignette does not change the visa’s validity. If the previously issued travel permission allows its holder to remain in the UK for two (2) years, the same validity period will appear in the vignette.

Documentary requirement

In order for the vignette to be issued, the requesting party should present a police report. The report shall corroborate their claims and arguments. Without this, it would be very difficult to acquire the vignette

Other types of visa vignettes

Vignettes are also utilized for visa transfers. This is commonly issued to individuals who have expiring passports. Again, once the visa is transferred, its validity does not change.

To obtain the vignette, the applicant must bring his or her old and new passport.

On the other hand, if the applicant fails to enter the UK during the required timeframe, they may use the vignette to adjust their entry date. However, they must present strong and compelling evidence why they cannot enter during the prescribed date.

In the meantime, if their visa has already expired but they are unable to enter the UK, they may not obtain a vignette. What they need to do is to file a new visa application. Such prerogative is observed by the UK Border Agency (UKBA) to prevent the abuse of visa vignettes.
