I noted a BM comment yesterday who said he would love to holiday in Phuket, but his wife had written the place off saying she would never go back. So he can go solo...555
The Marriott there is really nice.
They also built a really nice, big Hilton we looked at but was quite expensive

The Hilton is very pricey and the main reason we never stayed there.
We did however have dinner in their rooftop restaurant which was fabulous.

    And that's what I honestly don't get.

Despite my over the top hatred of Pattaya
In reality, it's not an aestheticly beautiful place.....
So why would you pay crazy money to stay in the Hilton in a crappy place??

    Indoor connection to central festival!
You have the beach view from your balcony, and shopping, entertainment, restaurants from all over the world, cinema.. You never have to even go outside! 555

I won't pay crazy money to stay... ANYWHERE. That is why I basically stay away from high end areas... Vancouver included.

When my son and I were riding our motorbikes back from Mesai, we stopped at Chiang Rai about 5 PM to find an inexpensive, but clean motel/hotel. My old Garmin GPS has a bunch of accommodation listed, but is not up to date. Each place I went to in my hotel range (400 to 600 baht) no longer existed. We talked to some kids on the street and asked if they knew of a nearby hotel and they explained where to go. We went into the lobby of a place that was VERY ordinary, and they wanted 2000 baht. I verbally said "SCREW THAT! I'LL RIDE HOME IN THE DARK BEFORE PAYING 2000 FOR A DUMP!" And, that is exactly what we did. Three hours later we were back in Chiang Mai.

It's not that I can't afford $100 for a room just to sleep. It's just that I know the going price of everything. In Vancouver we had to pay $140 for just a tiny "sleeper" room with no toilet, but there isn't anything inexpensive in Vancouver. In Bangkok you can get a decent room for 800 baht. In Chiang Mai there are decent rooms for 400 baht. Same with Pattaya. If you don't want to stay in the down town "strip", there are 400 baht rooms in a decent hotel on 3rd Avenue. Not fancy or on the beach, but clean and comfortable. It is different if it's a special occasion, and in that case you just pony up the cash.

And, we can still argue over what constitutes a "Crappy Place". I would call Phuket a crappy place before I called Pattaya a crappy place. Phuket charges WAY more for less in just about everything: food, accommodation, transportation, shopping and things to do. Even the women want more. If I just wanted to lie on a beach somewhere then there are hundreds of places in Thailand to choose from away from the tourist rip-off centers.

I think the view of the beach and harbour from a high beach-side hotel is pretty aesthetically pleasing... you are far enough away not to be able to smell the water... yet close enough to enjoy the view...

^ yeah, views are nice anywhere there.....wouldn't dare swim in it though!

I stayed up near the top of one of the multi story View Talay buildings and it's much cooler up there as well as the view.
this time,in the rainy season, i could see mountains across the bay towards HH. back to google maps and i worked out it was near HH and 85kms.

That looks right from where my old View Talay time share used to be. Koh Larn island in the back ground.

They look a lot better than the ones I saw down' there about 20 years ago. I wouldn't have taken any of them back to the hotel.

I am sort of being hypocritical.
We are at Aloft on Soi 11 now
It is not aestheticly pleasing but has a lot of good bars and restaurants.
I chose this because it was with the points I wanted to use.

But that is exactly what we plan on doing. .... basically relaxing in the hotel and pool and just going outside for a few bites to eat right by the hotel

Who knows.....the wife is working Saturday and I may not go to Hong Kong so I may take her car and go see Dopey in Pattaya 555

You likely haven't been to Phuket in quite some time.....
They have many rooms in the 500-700baht rooms.

And although I would stay in the them because I do like luxury, I think Thailand has great basic rooms for great prices
