Things that stick in your mind ...

Maybe it is just me but I doubt it.

I have lots of Thailand "moments", like little video clips or photos that seem stuck in my memory.
Things that made an impression at the time and stayed there.

    Where was it?
    When was it?
    What was it?
Why do you think this image stays with you?

    Where was it?
Under the elevated motorway heading north out of Bangkok

    When was it?
Nearly a decade ago on one of my first visits to Thailand

    What was it?
I was on a mini bus heading out on a day trip somewhere, it was a weekend. From the mini bus I looked down into a little clearing under the motorway as we flashed by.

There was a little pond and a couple of small trees, a rope ran between the trees and a small old tarpaulin was pegged out to make a rough tent. Hung between two more trees was a neat row of washing and laying on a mat in the sunshine, near the pond, the “home owner” was reading a newspaper.

Why do you think this image stays with you?
He had nothing; he was living under a bridge and was homeless by most definitions - yet he was a picture of contentment.

To me it said, make the most of what you have because it’s all you have.

    Enjoy.

One night out in BKK been out to dinner had a big laugh finished the night down in soi 12 or 13 at a street bar.

Thinking how cool how friendly it always is when out and about.

Taking one of Mrs W's friends home about 3 in the morning full of cheer.
We are on Suk right by the Emporium and we are stopped by Army trucks deploying gun totting soldiers as they deployed behind any cover...

Sobering thought that this was still a place where the army was the power.

This was the night before the first big flare up where 100 or so Red shirts died....

    Where was it?
Bangkok. Some upmmarket night club in the Sukhumvit area

    When was it?
    Around Midnight ... circa 2004

    What was it?
I was standing there waiting for my girl to get back from the bathroom and thought she had just walked past me - small figure, cute, long dark hair - it must have been her. I grabbed her by the arm and said something like "Hey, where do you think you are going?" before I realised I had just man-handled the wrong woman (Oh sh:t!)

She looked surprised for about half a second - then looked me up and down in a not unkind kind of way - and said "Excuse me but my friends are waiting for me" indicating a small group of Thais nearby looking at me with a mix of surprise and puzzlement.

She then extricated her arm from my grip - as I had been too dumbfounded to even let go - smiled and walked off.

Why do you think this image stays with you?
The contrast between Thailand and farangland - in farangland I'd have got my face slapped - in Thailand, she took my actions as a compliment - the fish were jumping into her boat kind of thing. There was no mistaking the satisfaction in that final smile.

    Enjoy.

Nope, that was another time ....

    Where was it?
Bangkok. Sukhumvit Road around Soi 15

    When was it?
My second trip to Thailand. Circa 2002

    What was it?
I was walking along Sukhumvit heading toward Soi Cowboy. As a first-timer I had heeded the advice of more experienced mongers and avoided the free-lancers and stuck to the relative safety of girls from established bars.

Now, well into my second trip I was feeling a little more bullet-proof and passing by the Thermae coffee house a pretty Thai standing on the street with a parasol looked at me and smiled. I walked on a little and thought to myself "Yeah, you can do this."

I walked back and confidently said to her in Thai "What is your name?" I am not sure what name I got in reply - I have since said it might as well have been "Bruce" as the near baritone pitch of "her" voice immediately shattered my confidence.

I just about ran the rest of the way to Soi Cowboy.

Why do you think this image stays with you?
Stay with me? I've been trying to forget it for years!

    Enjoy.

This is one that has stayed with me since my last trip ... tho it is not upbeat ...

    Where Was It?

Taking the rail link out to the airport, for our flight to Chiang Mai. Nui and I were both standing, as the train was crowded, and I was gazing down out of the windows on the north side.

    When Was It

This past July ... my second trip ... and right after spending the day touring Ayutthaya.

    What Was It

I guess you could call it a ghetto, but it probably a half a kilometer or more of shacks that looked like they were thrown together with whatever material was available, with little boardwalks instead of sidewalks between them. Dozens if not hundreds of these little boxes, with many people visible moving around between them.

Why Do You Think This Image Stays With You?

I had not seen the poor side of Thailand until that moment. It took me a moment to realize what I was seeing, and when I did, I realized that there were likely thousands of people living in that crowded shanty town. It made me realize what a country looked like with the abscence of any kind of social safety net.

    Where was it?
Phuket, Patong, Bangla Road, Soi Eric or Gonzo

    When was it?
    A few years ago . Circa 2003/2004

    What was it?
I was having a drink with a farang woman who was staying at the same hotel as me - and we were people watching some of the goings on in the Soi.

There were two European guys near us who were splashing their money around, buying lots of drinks and lady drinks and generally making a lot of noise being far less entertaining than they thought they were.

    I made some comment about them impressing the ladies with their free flow of money and she calmly replied;
"They are not impressed, not at all and what do they really think of these guys? It is the same thing I'd be thinking: you are just another useless drunk like the one I married. He pissed away all our money at a bar like this. . . and thats how I ended up with nothing. You can see it in their eyes, they have no respect whatsoever for these guys."

Why do you think this image stays with you?
It was a woman's view of what other women were really thinking. I don't know if she was right but I respect what she said.

    Enjoy.[/QUOTE]

That sounds so much like the observation of the lonely Aussie lady at the Raming Lodge that I chatted with over breakfast. She was a bit of a cow, but her observation about the bored Thai girl with the old farang really stuck with me. She might have been full of sh*t, but that one observation was bang on the money.

But don't you notice that? It's one of the first things that struck me when I first went to Thailand... young girls faking emotions with middle-aged men. I still find it as disturbing now as I did then... it's one of my dilemmas when I meet a new TG. Am I that sad old man with a young girl? If the answer is "no" I carry on... 555

But often it is "yes" and I move on instead...

woke up early to a strange sensation around my chest...found an old yai (granny) and her grandson (in whose house we were staying) pulling the hairs on my chest and laughing

EXactly my point elsewhere, find a quiet water hole where youn can just have a reasonably priced beer and a converstion without having to put up with the ugly tourists and watch the poor BGs trying to forget where they are and why.... Diiligaf bar, front yard of an expat Aussie in Rawai was the closest I could find..

    Where was it?
Bangkok ... somewhere on Sukhumvit Road

    When was it?
    Several years ago

    What was it?
I was buying some DVDs from a street vendor, negotiating the price in Thai and at the same time he was dealing with another customer in English. We agreed on a price per DVD that was exactly half what he was charging the non-Thai speaking tourist right in front of me. I remember the way he looked at me as he did this - he KNEW that I would not say anything to the tourist.

Why do you think this image stays with you?

This was the first time I remember feeling officially neutral in a Thai V Farang matter.

I think that as you travel more and more to Thailand you start to see things from the Thai perspective. I don't know that you change sides so much as take up a neutral stance on some things.

For example, these days when I hear of some guy who has handed over a fortune to the first bargirl he met, I'll probably still feel some sympathy for the guy but I'll be equally happy for the girl who landed a big one.

    Enjoy.

    Where was it?
    In deepest darkest Isaan

    When was it?
Nearly a year ago. Christmas morning...

    What was it?
Sunrise... seeing the sun rise across the fields... amid the increasing cacophony of noise emanating from the farm animals all around me... as Santa scampered across the paddy field with his reindeer in pursuit... while cows and dogs looked nonchalantly on...

Why do you think this image stays with you?
Never spent Christmas in such a non-Christmas place... and it was great. Apart from the hangover-induced visions of Santa...
