Australian woman knife to death in Phuket

    Video: Phuket stabbing tragedy
POLICE are hunting two killers who knifed to death an Australian woman in a bag snatch gone wrong on the Thai holiday island of Phuket last night.

The woman struggled to hold her bag. A 10cm knife wound to the heart killed her soon after as the two men sped off on a motorcycle about 10.30pm.

Another woman was also slashed on the arm but was treated in a Phuket hospital and allowed to leave early today after receiving stitches.

Both women were in a group of 10 travel agents from Perth who had arrived on Phuket on Monday to inspect the five-star Katathani Beach Resort, which dominates the small bay at Kata Noi, south of Patong and Karon, on Phuket's west coast.

The motorcycle pair attempted to snatch the bag in the narrow road outside the resort but fled empty handed, leaving the victims not realising immediately that they has been stabbed.

The wounded woman told police later: "We were walking single-file along the road, coming back from dinner. These guys had gone past a couple of times, and that started to bother us.

"Then I heard a noise behind me and I turned to see what I thought was my friend being pushed in the chest. I tried to help her.

"The men rode off, empty-handed. We started walking again, and only then did we realise we'd both been slashed."
One woman died in the road outside the hotel, cut in the heart. Staff rushed to help the other woman.

Two of the travel agents later watched in sorrow, hugging each other and crying, as the body of their holiday companion was shifted from a makeshift resting place in a loading dock at the resort to an ambulance.

Grainy security camera footage captured the men on the motorcycle but the numberplate could not be distinguished. Pol;ice believe a particularly sharp weapon was used.

The brutal murder of a tourist will shock the entire holiday island of Phuket, just as it shocked staff and guests at the Katathani last night. The owner of the Katathani, Sombut Atiset, came to see what had happened.

Australian honorary consul Larry Cunningham sped to the Phuket International Hospital in Phuket City to check the condition of the wounded woman before joining Phuket police in interviewing her at the resort.

Australian embassy officials are in the process of contacting the woman's family in Australia.

The Katathani on Kata Noi bay is one of the quieter parts of Phuket, some distance from the noisy swirl of crowded Karon and Patong and one of the least likely places on Phuket for this kind of brutal murder.

Bag-snatching by youths on motorcycles is one of the perils of Phuket, particularly for women out walking in isolated streets. But it was the first time anyone could remember a tourist being killed.

A young German visitor had her thumb cut off in a similar savage incident in Krabi Town, a province nearby, earlier this year. Her thumb was successfully reattached in surgery on Phuket and four youths were quickly arrested and charged.

Lately, talk on Phuket has been about the mysterious deaths of two Canadian sisters whose bodies were found on Friday in a room on Phi Phi, another holiday island a ferry ride from Phuket, or the six drownings of tourists that have occurred on Phuket beaches in the space of one month and a day.

Phuket police are likely to pull our all stops in their efforts to find the killers. The holiday island made international news in February when Hollywood actor Jeremy Renner was in a group attacked by axe and knife-wielding security guards at a pub in Phuket City.

Prominent Phuket resort owner-manager Vorasit Issara was seriously injured but Renner was unharmed.

International Press will have a field day with all these tourist fatalities, to the detriment of LOS tourism!

    How safe is Phuket??
There is a big criminal element, no safety gear and motorbikes + alcohol and over crowded roads.
Under payed locals who want a bit of the action.

    Melting pot!

Brilliant ... just brilliant ... how not to commit a crime .... payoff zero ... outcome: wanted for a high profile murder .... will there be anyone on Phuket not looking for these two ???

and ... I have recently talked some workmates into taking their first trip to Thailand, and recommended they go to Phuket .... gave them all the info I could .... last I heard they had booked ... 5 nights in Patong for the party time and 5 nights somewhere quiet to wind down and relax..... yep, the Katathani at Kata Noi .....

Interested to know the ratio of deaths/murders/suspect deaths in say Phuket compared to say Bali. I have never felt threatened in Patong, but have seen plenty of undesirables lurking around. Unfortunatley tourist areas with $$$$ will attract them.

Condolences to the family in this senseless killing, hope the perps get there deserved dues when caught.

One of the drivers for 'negative' reporting is coincidence - remember all those bus/coach crashes in Oz (Grafton was a bad one); and Japanese swimmers drowning on GC beaches?

On a busy news week the Kata killing would pass with little fanfare but coupled with Phi Phi deaths it's BIG news on a slow news week. I hope the normally savvy tourist will understand these events for what they are, tragic misadventures.

I wouldn't wander around Southport/Surfers area between say 9pm and 5am yet Aussies feel safe doing so in Thailand.

My post is purely objective - condolences to family and friends.

Men arrested over Aussie mum Michelle Smith's murder in Thailand

TWO men suspected of riding the getaway motorcycle in the Michelle Smith murder have been arrested in Samutsakhon province, near Bangkok.
The arrests came in the Ban Phaeo district at 8am today, police said.
The arrested men, Surasak Boy Suwannachot, 26, and Surin Taptong, 34, were transported to Phuket today.
"They were charged with robbery and murder and they both confessed," said police Major General Chanasit Vatanavarangoon.
The pair, who both fled to the mainland after the killing, were filmed by a security camera during the attack, he said.
A purple motorbike thought to have been used in the attack has been recovered at a shop in Phuket where one of the suspects worked.
It comes as Thai police earlier issued arrest warrants for two suspects in the murder of the Perth travel agent and posted a reward for information leading to their capture.
Senior officers announced the initiatives at a press conference yesterday, four days after the 60-year-old mother-of-three was fatally stabbed during a bungled bag snatch.
The investigation into Mrs Smith's murder has received a high priority with Thai Prime Minister, Yingluck Shinawatra - a recent visitor to Australia - urging more intensity in efforts to find the wanted pair.
A reward of 300,000 baht ($9670) was offered to anyone providing information leading to the arrest of the men.
At the time, she was among a group of 10 travel agents returning to their hotel after an evening meal.
The money has been put up by provincial police officials and the owner of the Katathani Phuket Beach Resort where the group had been staying.
Mrs Smith, from the Perth suburb of Joondalup and a veteran of the travel industry, struggled as the passenger on the bike tried to steal her bag.
She was fatally injured when he plunged a 10cm knife into her chest. Her companion, Tammee Lynn, 42, was also hurt and required stitches.
Police CCTV footage shows the men attacking the women.
Soon after Mrs Smith collapsed and despite efforts by Ms Lynn to halt the bleeding, the Perth woman died at the scene.
Police sources said the CCTV footage identified a portion of the Honda Dream 100cc motorbike's four digit number plate.
Images of the footage had also been forwarded to Bangkok for further amplification.
Growing concerns over attacks on tourists in Thailand, including the seaside resort of Pattaya, have led to Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung calling for a crackdown on criminal groups operating at the resort areas.
Increasing theft and violent arguments between tourists and samlor or 'tuk tuk' drivers have alarmed tourism officials.
Four Australians were assaulted in February last year when a group of 20 tuk tuk drivers attacked the group.
One Australian was knifed but survived the assault.
Australian Ambassador to Thailand, James Wise, is to visit Phuket next week to hold talks with officials, including the provincial governor and tourism authorities, over concerns for the safety of Australian travelers.

The business of driveby bag snatching has become a real problem in Patts, they drive up alongside a couple on a moped and grab the bag and race off.

A friend of my mate there, they are both expats, had his wife on the back and they grabed the bag cutting the strap with a blade but in the struggle and the element of surprise the guy and his wife lost balance and crashed.
Finished in hospital for a few days and stuck at home for a couple of weeks.

The advise is even if only going a couple of blocks lock the bag in the compartment under the seat.

Latest story was that the perps went looking for easy money which they needed to pay 300 baht for a meal.
Muggings are that kind of opportunistic thing.
Knife crime has become a problem worldwide. People say they carry knives for "protection" against other people who routinely carry weapons. Its not a big leap from there to using them to get what you want. Nobody deserves this and the callous act has shattered many lives.
