Thailand Buddhism's Supreme Patriarch Dies at 100

    24 October 2013
Thailand's Supreme Patriarch, who headed the country's order of Buddhist monks for more than two decades, died Thursday. He was 100.

His successor will be formally appointed by Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Thailand is the world's most heavily Buddhist country, with more than 90 percent of its 67 million people members of the religion. As the head of the religion, the patriarch has legal authority to oversee different sects of Buddhism.

The Supreme Patriarch promotes Buddhism and leads the Sangha Supreme Council, which oversees the country's Buddhist monks and novices of all sects. The council's job is to make sure monks follow Buddha's teachings and do not violate the rules set by the council.

The Supreme Patriarch was a friend of His Holiness Dalai Lama of Tibet, who called the Thai monk "my elder brother." The Dalai Lama paid several visits to Thailand since his first state visit in 1967, and each time he would visit the temple where the Supreme Patriarch resided to have a discussion.

The Supreme Patriarch was born Charoen Gajavatra on Oct. 3, 1913, in Thailand's western province of Kanchanaburi, the eldest of the three sons. He was still a boy when his father died, and was raised by his aunt.

    15-day mourning period set

    15-day mourning period set
    The Nation October 25, 2013 1:00 am

According to the government’s announcement, the national flag will fly at half-mast during October 25-27 to commemorate his departure.

Meanwhile, all civil servants and government employees are ordered to wear unadorned black clothing for mourning for 15 days, starting from October 25.

From 8am on October 25, Buddhist followers will be allowed to pay respect to His Holiness. At noon, his body would be moved from Chulalongkorn Hospital to Wat Bororanives, via Rajadamri Road towards the expressway (Rama IV entrance). From Urupong exit, the motorcade will turn left to Petchburi Road, towards Rajadamnoen Klang Avenue, Democracy Monument and Phra Sumain Road where the temple is located.

The departure of the revered 19th Supreme Patriarch of the Rattanakosin Kingdom brings great sadness to his devout followers, who have been anxiously monitoring updates on his health.

Chulalongkorn University, where he was being treated, confirmed that His Holiness passed away at 7.30pm last night.

Rather than pass away, I suspect he has passed to a higher level of consciousness?

The reports acknowledge that he has died - but rather than "passed away" they refer to his "departure".

No apparent mass grieving around here ( amongst the non-Muslims) although I hear that government workers and bank officers etc should be wearing black.

    Reported last night:

"All the bars in Nana closed and most of others, including Hilarys 1 thru 9. Those open had outside lights off and no music." Briofoz.

I wonder if this will go for the mourning period of 15 days or just a few nights as a sign of respect?
