Going 'missing' in Thailand

Two parts to this one

First, from Sydney Morning Herald today

Canberra man Nathan Hansford missing in Thailand

March 3, 2014

A 36-year-old Canberra man living in Thailand has been declared missing by his Australian family amid growing concerns for his well-being.

Nathan Hansford, who has worked in Bangkok for 10 years as an international contractor specialising in public finance and capital market development, has not been in contact with family and friends since Christmas.

His family said he regularly travelled internationally for work assignments but had always kept in regular contact with his Australian family and friends throughout his travels.

They said his mobile phone had been disconnected and he had not been using his email or social media accounts.

In a statement, the family said it "hopes that Nathan is oblivious to a search across Thailand for him and that he is ‘lying on a beach taking a holiday’."

"This situation is out of character and the family holds grave concerns for his whereabouts," they said.

Mr Hansford was last seen leaving his home in the gated suburb of Thungkru on January 31 to travel in a taxi to Mo Chit in central Bangkok.

Family members plan to fly to Bangkok on Tuesday to help local authorities search for Mr Hansford.

"Thai and Australian authorities have been very helpful," the family said.

Mr Hansford is married to a Thai woman and lived in Canberra before moving to Thailand in 2004. His parents and brother still live in Canberra.

Family members are calling for anyone who has information about Mr Hansford to contact the authorities.

Of course hope this man is alive and well . . .

the comment

"Thai and Australian authorities have been very helpful," the family said.
Anyone know what it takes to get co-operation from Thai authorities in a missing persons case

Have often seen requests on other forums, which are generally deleted, from people looking for a lost relative or friend

What would it take to:
- get a bank to advise if a person's bank accounts were still 'active' and look at CCTV footage, if available, to see who was using eg ATM card?
- get immigration to advise if he had left the country, or even reported in on his usual 90-day date?

___________________

Must be near four years ago now I saw a request on a forum from family members desperately seeking a person to look for a bloke who had 'disappeared' from contact several months before. Phone was dead, they said.

As it was within 50km of where we were living at the time I went 'in search' with a basic description of the man and the vague area he lived in; few farang around there and wan't too hard, 'fat old farang with no hair, lived by a river' was remarkably good in narrowing it down!
Located him and got a cool (not 'cool' but cool) reception.
He'd made a decision not to contact the UK family he'd left behind. Said both he and his wife's phones were broken (new sim cards perhaps).
Gave me a glass of water for my trouble and said I could tell them he was OK, but no more.

___________________

probably plenty like him choosing to go off the (family) radar. Equally there's a chance the 'family' request could be faked, someone chasing up bad debts from someone who'd fled to Thailand.

___________________

And works both ways. In Chalong our neighbour, late 70s had a fall, had earlier had a stroke.
He had an email address for his son in UK, so helpful me sent an email with my contact details if he/family wanted any more info.
Got a one word reply
"Thanks"

As for this missing man - lots of missing info from that news story -
why was he headed to Mo Chit bus station, and where was he intending to go?
Where was his wife - Bangkok, or at his planned destination?
Working here 10 years - work permit, and what about the employer?
His wife would be thrilled, wouldn't she, if he was "‘lying on a beach taking a holiday"

wasn't difficult in that area; family just thanked me very much for my efforts, nothing else I could do

Getting off track, but thinking this afternoon how easy it would be for someone to locate me if they knew the general area - district/amphur Tha Mai according to wiki is 612 sq km (Phuket is 543) with 69,000 people (Phuket about 600,000). Tha Mai town area 9,000.
We've been here three years on the 8th this month, my tally there would be less than 10 westerners in the amphur here long-term, but in town area just me, one Englishman a teacher, plus two elderly German well known here over 20yrs. There's a Swede and a few German/Dutch living rurally. Quickly narrow it down to under 65 - me and the teacher. Just ask at market, 7/11 or a friendly local policeman - 'tall or short?' would get the right answer just as my 'fat old farang with no hair, lived by a river' did in my earlier post. There's no hiding - once in town I wanted something delivered and started to draw a map. Not necessary "oh I know where you live". Ms H often gets reports of places I've been seen cycling - who needs GPS tracking?

^ but not on Phuket . . .my search description of 'fat old farang with no hair, lived by a river' may not give enough clues!
Was told at Chanthaburi Immigraton there were about 80 people doing 90-day reports ie here long term, province population 510,000. About 30 of them live in the north/inland around Soi Dao a settlement of (not sure which one, maybe Swedes) Scandinavians.

On the more serious side of going missing, or getting lost

Of he people who live here/or visit long-term, do you register with your government's safe traveler (or similar) site?

At present the NZ Embassy site is the only place my location is recorded.
Last time I flew into the country I didn't know where we'd recently moved to (never thought to write it down), so put previous address on the form.
Bank, drivers licence similarly out of date.

Yes - and update it.

Plus the Immigration police have it on their computer from the 90 day report forms.

^ far from it if this post on TV is accurate

I worked with Nathan in Afghanistan 2006/2007 where he was Chief Financial Officer of the Ministry of Energy and Water. He then worked in Iraq, out of Basra, which at the time was perilous. He is a debt management/treasury specialist and I am infrastructure but we continued to interact on projects where our fields crossed. He worked on a project for the Public Debt Management Office at MOF Thailand and most recently did a significant project at the Cambodia Ministry of Finance.
Nathan worked with PDMO in 2009. By that time I had left the Ministry of Finance and moved to work for the new energy regulator here. Nathan's work was on capital market development, specifically working on a bond investment fund. It was funded by the Asian Development Bank.

So if ya want to disappear , do it in Pats or Bkk?

Disappear into a crowd?
Dont 'engage' people much , change your accent , and move around suburbia regularly?
Still have to report but.

Thai cops still manage to find sh!tty little criminals with no papers pretty easily when they want to....

Maybe he's holidaying in Dubai?

^ Mo Chit - don't say that, I'll be there very late tonight and have had the 'be careful' lecture
last time there, January, no gunfire, but a fearsome argument between a young English couple (if they had guns they'd have used 'em!)

add in conspiracy theory #34 re this man - he has been 'disappeared' re his work with public debt, maybe knew something he shouldn't.
The billions (is it 300?) missing re the rice fund?

Hun Sen (a relative by marriage to Thaksin) sells Cambodian paddy rice in Thailand for nearly double market value.
I bet he got paid 555!
Excellent "Public Debt Management" - for Kampuchea 555!
