    Friday 5th Dec - King's birthday holiday

Many business closures, government departments and schools although bars are open ... as far as I know.

There will be celebrations around the moat area/Thapae Gate of Chiang Mai and obvious disruption the traffic with a long weekend.

    What's happening elsewhere?
    Cheers, Rob.
Lifes journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well-preserved body, but to skid in sideways totally worn out, shouting: holy s.h.i.t what a ride!

Bars have been open for the past few years. Who knows what will happen this year, anybody's guess. A good source is:

There's a lot of cultural performances in BKK and heavy traffic is expected- but the fun is sooo worth it.

We were in Chiang Mai for the week around Dec 5th in 2009 - great time to be there as a tourist, every evening there were events/performances at the Thapae gate area near where we were staying, and (find some pics later) we went out of the town to Ratchaphruek Gardens, they'd all been smartened up for the celebrations, as had the old town centre area.
Nice time of year though it did involve some clothes shopping - something I'd usually avoid but it dropped as low as 15C which was a near-death experience for MsH.

Bit outdated perhaps, seems there won't be a ban anywhere this year:
    http://www.thephuketnews.com/phuket-...er-5-49934.php

The Phuket News this morning contacted Phuket police commander Maj Gen Patchara Boonyasit who said that he had received no notification from the Royal Thai Police in Bangkok but added that, looking at previous years, an alcohol ban was unlikely.

In Bangkok, however, a spokesman for the Royal Thai Police confirmed that he had spoken with the Police Strategy Unit which had decided there would be no booze ban on December 5, nor even any “request” to shops, bars, restaurants and wholesalers not to sell alcohol on the day.

Almost 100% sure Bangla will be closed on Dec 5th. Pretty sure it was closed last year for the birthday as well.
Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.

I'll be in Kanchanaburi with my Thai kids. The family usually goes to a nearby park where there is a celibration and lots of fireworks. I suspect it will be the same. Hard core drinkers just need to stock up the day before.

I had a pretty quiet one with my Thai family in Kan. Some nice fireworks in the evening.

King Bhumibol Adulyadej not seen on his 87th birthday

BANGKOK -- Thailand's revered monarch, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, was not seen on his 87th birthday on Friday, Dec. 5, a national holiday that is also celebrated concurrently in the kingdom as Father's Day.

Although many people around the country dressed in yellow, a royal colour, were hoping for a glimpse of the ailing monarch - and perhaps a few words - they were disappointed.

In years past, the king used his birthday for informal extemporaneous talks to his subjects before an invited audience on a wide variety of subjects. His birthday appearance last year at Hua Hin, where he has a seaside palace, was brief and marked by long pauses.

there's another thread re comments on Royal family . . . the author of that piece quoted in previous post would face imprisonment if he was in Thailand
reprinting it, or even providing a link to it's not a good idea either - more so on an open forum page
'The King’s health is a sensitive issue in Thailand and any discussion about the royal succession is tightly constrained by a stringent lese-majeste law'

I did read that Diana was open, but next door that LK was large dark.
    Is that correct?
