Advice for 21 yr old in SE Aisa

My eldest leaves on Thursday for a 3 month OS trip starting in the UK, but then arriving in LOS in about 3 weeks time. Going to Bangkok,Koh Phangan, Chang Mai, but also going to Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam..

I have being planning my final words of advice for him, but suddenly thought what a better place than TD to get some ideas on advice about safety of traveling to SEA for a 21 year old.

Obvious ones i was gonna say to him were

    1. You can't bribe cops anymore, so don't carry any drugs on you unless you want to spend the next 20 years in a Asian prison.

    2. Always keep your passport in a safe and carry a photocopy of your passport with you

    3. Don't get into a street fight with a thai ... one way or another you will loose

    4. If a situation or scene doesn't feel right, it probably isn't so back out

    5. LB's ... look at the hands or the neck ...5555

any good ones to add ?

Probably the best thing that you can tell him is to "enjoy the experience"

Surely the main one is to not fall in love... 55

Have you explained the p4p scene to him so it doesn't come as a surprise? "Oh, it's not a date?"

The top biggies you mentioned are good advice. About anything that could land him in harms way or in prison.

I wouldn't worry about the rest. You'll just come across and preachy, and it's always best to learn your own lessons anyway. It's just that some lessons are better not learnt through experience, but those are few.

At his age he is more than likely to hang around with the back packer set and frequenting the same bars as they do rather than the P4P area's....
But don't fall in love still applies 5555

Nag him about needing a life partner and settling down and this trip is the right time and place to find one.

At that age listening to my ol's would be the last thing i would do 555

Slam i know your kids respect you alot and listen to you to a certain degree... Zac will certainly take aboard anything i say as long as i aint stating the bleeding obvious. .. but i want to give the good advice because if something did go wrong, and i hadn't said anything i couldn't live with myself .... make sense ?

^^^ it is interesting how we take our own situations and then expect them to fit in with others.. On my trips to CM I see loads of youngsters backpacking in groups or by themselves. They all seem hang with their new found friends and party together. Very little interaction with the bar scene aside from perhaps a walk past to have a look.
There will be loads of young Scandinavian and German girls with more than enough blone hair and big.... to keep him happy.

Leave the bar girls for us old desperate types 5555

^^ Spot on ... an almost immediate assumption ... male = los = p4p ....5555. hooking up with other backpackers however is on the cards.. but its mostly about the money, its all about staying as long as you can for as cheaply as you can...

I should have mentioned,he has only a ticket into BKK ... not out

Cheapest I have seen advertised in CM is a tent in the back yard of a back packing place.. 50 bht a night, his shoestring budget should last 555
I think that many of us would be surprised at just how little some of these youngsters are able to get by on.

No advise, and something I have posted before...
Was written in my journal by an American and became my travel mantra...
And although the meaning changed over the years.. It still is..
Nice gift from a dad to his kid, and he can make it what he wants...

Once there lived a village of creatures
along the bottom of a great crystal river.

The current of the river swept silently over them all
young and old, rich and poor, good and evil,
the current going its own way,
knowing only its own crystal self.

Each creature in its own manner
clung tightly to the twigs and rocks of the river bottom,
for clinging was their way of life,
and resisting the current what each had learned from birth.

But one creature said at last,
    “I am tired of clinging.
Though I cannot see it with my eyes,
I trust that the current knows where it is going.
I shall let go, and let it take me where it will.
Clinging, I shall die of boredom.”

The other creatures laughed and said
“Fool! Let go, and that current you worship
will throw you tumbled and smashed across the rocks,
and you will die quicker than boredom!”

But the one heeded them not,
and taking a breath did let go,
and at once was tumbled and smashed
by the current across the rocks.

Yet in time, as the creature refused to cling again,
the current lifted him free from the bottom,
and he was bruised and hurt no more.
