Lots of nice places. Just walk up the hill once on the island and look around. Most are all within 1Km.

My wife was with her Thai friends so was a bit limited budget wise on her hotel choice
She didn't want to big time them either in staying in a nicer hotel but I can tell the little Kunnai has become use to nice hotels 555

I didn't realize how nice Samet was.......looked beautiful
    But did look crowded

I will post some pics tomorrow

Samet is usually a more of a Thai family destination. It's nice and my wife loves it but I personally would prefer elsewhere. This where though we have introduced Dao's mother and grandmother to that thing they had never seen. A beach, watching grannies face for all of these new experiences was priceless for both of us. Thier first ferry ride was a whole other story. 55

It looks like she stayed in Jeps Bungalows where I have stayed before.
You couldnt say the rooms are salubrious by any means , but its absolute beach front and away from the crowds and one boat stops nearby.

The food and eating spot is superb and thats where a tg and I spent all our time really.
Sea is clean and nice for a swim.

Because Samet gets little rain , and because it is striking distance from Bkk and Patts , Samet gets busy on weekends with middle class Thais or company tour groups.
The price , already not cheap like most islands accommodation , more than doubles in price on weekends , so my 3 tours there have all been on weekdays.
If you want to see all the lovely beaches , take a boat tour ...I rented an ATV and you can see little from the central dusty track.
Theres half a dozen little bars near the main jetty area ( yes with bgs) , the usual reggae bar and heaps of restaurant bars.

I like Samet , and its only about 15 minutes on the ferry over.
How they can develop a National Park like this , is however , unfathomable to me.

you had me scratching my head there a minute....from the ferry's timetable....

ferry / boat to koh samet

    FERRY BOAT TIMETABLES
The ferry boat journey costs Approx 100 - 150 Baht per person and takes 40 mins to reach koh samet, which is 7 kms from the mainland.

Well I could have sworn it took us something like 15 to 20 mins over to Samet , but maybe Im wrong on that -

Ko Samet travel guide - Wikitravel

" It's only a 2.5 hour ride to Ban Phe, where one can take a 20-minutes ferry to the island."

Its a nice little island anyway and a good alternative to Pats when meeting up with friends or family wanting a side trip out of Bkk

^ from further down in the same Lonely Planet article (link) you posted....

    "By Boat

The boat ticket office is open 24 hours.
Ferries from Ban Phe or Nuan Thip (they are about 1/8 mile apart, with Ban Phe to the north opposite a 7-11) to Ko Samet take around 30 to 45 minutes. Only buy a one-way ticket (70 baht)

there are speedboats for hire at Baan Phe as well....but they need to be chartered....I guess these would get you across in 15-20 mins

as you say its a nice island especially taken as a two/three day trip outta Patts but best avoided on weekends and Thai holiday periods...some nice snorkeling and lovely white beaches with clear turquoise waters there as well

Yes , I walked to there once and this was the beach that later copped the oil spill
    Appears to be fully recovered?

^ The other thing is there are numerous drop off points - so one near the south of the island will take longer to reach by boat than the northern most ones

mate...I've taken that ferry trip 100+ times (from Ban Phe Pier on the mainland to Nadan Pier on Samet and return) as I used help out a mate who had a dive business in Jomtiem/Patts (before I lived in LOS in the late 90's-early 2000's..on my holidays) for 5-6 years taking scuba divers out there for day trips...so believe me when I say I know damn well just how slow those old tub ferries are....add to that 2.5-3hrs each way in a mini bus and you can just imagine how knackered we were when we got back home to Jomtiem..fkn shattered 555

chob is right...you can take the ferry further on down the east coast to another couple of Bays/Piers but that does take longer
