Car bomb rocks Thailand's Koh Samui on eve of holidays

Police officers inspect the site of the blast at a car park of a shopping mall.

The bomb went off in the basement of the Central Festival shopping mall after a fashion show at 11.30pm Friday.

The force of the blast left debris scattered over a wide area, leaving the vehicle's mangled engine block and undercarriage.

Local Surat Thani governor Chatpong Chatput said a fire that occurred at a warehouse at the same time at the Sahakorn Coop food centre in Surat Thani may have been caused by explosives.

Security tightened as Samui bombers sought
    11 April 2015

Authorities have tightened security measures across the country after a car bombing rocked a Koh Samui shopping mall at the start of the busy Songkran holiday.

The pickup containing the bomb had been stolen in Yala, leading to early speculation that the incident was linked to the insurgency in the three southern border provinces.

But a government spokesman was quick to steer the speculation in another direction, saying the attack might be linked to incidents earlier this year in Bangkok.

"Initial reports back the theory that [the Samui bombers] are the same group that created bombings in Bangkok," said Maj Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd.

Surprised there isn't more talk about this here. So are the only 2 options Southern insurgents or anti government? If it is southern insurgents then is this the 1st time they have hit one of the main tourist spots?
