Allowance for a teenager in BKK

I've told my wife that my stepson should have a weekly allowance now that he is in high school and 15yrs old.
His social life is more going out now than playing around the house.
The movies, the mall.....just teenage stuff.

And believe me....they make this kid do enough chores that he earns it 555

But looking how much to give him it sort of struck me it is not that much different than the amount I'd give a teenager in say , Vancouver.

I looked today and the movies is 140baht
Swenson's and Pizza Company aren't cheap and even sitting down for some street food would be 60-80baht.

    I was thinking 600-700baht/wk.....that is 22/30cad

    Thailand is not that cheap!

    Yup
You want him to have money to do things but the right amount that he has to think about what he spends it on and how he spends it.

My mom was great...but was horrible with money, so never taught us any fiscal responsibility

    Can't he get a job?

I never had an allowance off my parents... I had to work for any money I wanted... made me appreciate it...

Maybe you could match what he earns? Or some other ratio that motivates him to get some part time work?

    ?
Agreed but I would not match what he earns,

Geez I give my son $5 a week and that is just for his phone, plus he is in Australia.

He will do some work around home or his mother place and get a bit extra but not much maybe $25 for a day but its a lot for him. I sometimes make up jobs for him to do just so he can earn a bit at home like polish my Harley 55.

He just got a part time job so will get a bit now to go out.

The situation may be very different in LOS... Even low paying jobs would more than likely go to people looking for full time employment. Plenty of Burmese who would gladly do the sort of work for the kind of pay that you would normally associate with part time or student jobs elsewhere...

Coming from Africa where jobs available vs people looking for work you become acutely aware of it.

My first trip to NZ I was at a mates place and they had their driveway dug up and re-paved. One guy, a low loader, a small digger and his dog and the job was done in a day.
Here that would provide employment to a team of workers with spades and wheelbarrows...

Have you not noticed that the lack of dirt bins in LOS is countered by those faceless people covered from head to foot and using small brooms and black bags to pick up rubbish? Walking dirt bins that are earning a small amount of money.

I am sure that there must be employment in LOS for kids who want to earn a bit of pocket money, but there must also be a long queue after the same sorts of jobs. Same here, kids can still get part time work, but best they know somebody who is willing to give them a job.

Only Thai high school students I know of with jobs are in family businesses, and possibly don't get paid either, an expectation they will help out after school
Different to eg NZ where many have part time jobs in supermarkets, retail stores, cafés after school and weekends

I never in my life got an allowance.
    Started a morning paper round at 8 y.o. - 5 am.
Always employed after that - paid board to Mum.

    There is no time
He goes to school at 6am and most days back home at 5pm or later
He usually gets a small job when he has school breaks

He is actually really good with money. He will save to buy things he wants
He doesn't really ask for anything over the top...only things like needing a new sport uniform and stuff

And he does a ton of chores at home. Hell...we probably owe him back pay 555

well M26...you are usually the one saying that prices in BKK are around as much if not more than those in Canada...so let's turn the question around to Canada..how much would you give a kid in Canada?...$20-$25 a week??...if so your 500-700 Baht figure should be about right

I was wondering that.......I guess I'd have to give more since...........say.....going by the cost of movies, it is 15cad here (which is 400baht)

I think money enough for movies/popcorn once a week and some money for eating a couple times a week(100baht each time)

Plus need to give him a little more to mack on some girls 555

^ I went to the movies today (cheap day....X-Men Franchise)..it cost me 80 baht...a tub of popcorn costs more 555

I'd honestly say that 500 baht a week would be generous

Well as long as he doesn't turn around and hand his allowance to his girlfriend, then he should be alright, 5555

    Is that everyday price?
A movie ticket is 140baht in BKK

Usually, it's about 200 baht a ticket depending on what type of seat you get.... popcorn and drinks for 2 (tickets included) will probably run you 600 baht all-in. 140 - 160 baht is on the cheap movie day.

Looks like at the big movie theatres in BKK, Major.....it is 120-140
He is not at point where he pays for his GF......but I guess ponying up for a popcorn helps in the dry humping progress! 555
