In his Friday night address he made it clear that ppl were to 'sit inside' the tray and not ride on the sides or be standing up. Conflicting information as usual but that seems to be a Thai trait which can go either way,

The law may be upheld in many RTP regions, especially cities yet relaxed in rural areas and small towns. On the other hand it may fizzle out as completely un-enforceable. Same same the Immigration personal info form.

A more sensible approach would be to limit tray pax to 3, all seated with backs to cab .... lap belts could be fitted?
    Cheers, Rob.
Lifes journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well-preserved body, but to skid in sideways totally worn out, shouting: holy s.h.i.t what a ride!

"Stupid rule dreamed up by people who live in air con homes and ride around in air-con limos" reckoned a Thai friend. "They have no idea of the life of ordinary folks".

    I reckon too.

    "passengers must wear seat belts"

    555 good luck with that.

They should probably start with making sure all vehicles have them fitted inside the cabin first. 55

    ...

Fatality figures around Songkran are pretty bad, but how many are caused by this? You see a ton of people riding in the tray all over the place during Songkran. I wonder how many motorbikes that eliminates from the roads. Plus it's such a vital part of transporting workers to and from construction sites that a total ban would probably hurt the economy.

Edit: Oh and Rivo, the thread title is totally misleading 555.

This has got to be my favourite part though.

"Officers exercise judgement on a case-by-case basis"

Oh but of course. In case of drivers with fat wallets, exceptions may be made.

Pretty much every school bus in Isaan will be insufficient to serve the communities. I have never seen one with kids hanging out the back of sitting on the roof.

Never seen it! Well I never 555!

You've never been to a part of Thailand with school songthaews? Unbelievable!.

There are some sensible limitations already in place, such that passengers should not be carried in the tray on high speed motorways like the BKK to Patts one. Ever seen some of the poor wretches on the back being driven at 150kph+?
Plenty of B roads still available to get from A-B.

The songthaews, at least for the little kids in my area have two teachers sitting at the back to keep the youngsters in check.

We will see after Songkran .... if any of the other High and Mighty Foot in Mouth Edics are anything to go by , it will all be forgotten about ...

I have read that if there is a 'langcar' ( gov. approved tray roof ) involved and the tax paid ( as in my Chevs scenario ) , they will allow 6 passengers up back , 3 on each side on proper benches . ( Dunno how that makes anything safer btw )

    Just for you;

Are you a magician? Because whenever I look at you, everyone else disappears!

I'm not a photographer, but I can picture me and you together.

Are you an interior decorator? Because when I saw you, the entire room became beautiful.

Are you religious? Because you're the answer to all my prayers.

Are you a camera? Because every time I look at you, I smile.

Did you sit in a pile of sugar? Cause you have a pretty sweet ass.

Do you have a Band-Aid? Because I just scraped my knee falling for you.

Do you know what my shirt is made of? Boyfriend material.

If I were a stop light, I'd turn red everytime you passed by, just so I could stare at you a bit longer.

I seem to have lost my phone number. Can I have yours?

Is your daddy a Baker? Because you've got some nice buns!

Do you have a name or can I just call you mine?

There are people who say Disneyland is the happiest place on earth. Apparently, none of them have ever been in your arms.

I bet you play soccer, because you're a keeper.

Did you invent the airplane? Cause you seem Wright for me.

If God made anything more beautiful than you, I'm sure he'd keep it for himself.

Although I find is 2000 baht ok............works best

Any pickup truck heading back to a village in the hills will have a LOT of passengers. Busses do not have regular runs in those isolated villages.
