The poster of the video will be sued by TAT under some law for showing Thailand in a bad way....

How does that sound? A bit like a TV whinger 555.

RIP... that was shallow where he dropped. He might have been ok in deeper water.

I used to do parasailing with my own chute and boat, with friends, not for hire.

The body harness looks fairly old and likely rated for ~ 140/150 kg. Stitching often gives way first and the combination of 2 persons + pull of tow boat could easily have caused gear failure. Instructor at fault for jumping on and tow boat should have discontinued the tow immediately. RIP Perth man.
    Cheers, Rob.
Lifes journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well-preserved body, but to skid in sideways totally worn out, shouting: holy s.h.i.t what a ride!

why did the Thai guy jump on as well? Did he think something was wrong? Or is that normal?
My only experience was in a pie making factory managing the gravy team

Definitely not normal (safe) procedure. The harness was a basic single, not rigged for tandem.

Looked as if the guy hung on a tad too long and didn't want to take a dunking. Oh and, contrary to reports, commercial parasailing harnesses don't have a quick release like skydive gear.

Hanging on to the chute perhaps, (unsafe all the same), but NOT climbing on a pax shoulders. That harness is a cheapie and even when new had less capacity than 2 persons + tow line pull weight.

One doesn't really need to steer a parasail as the boat operator can control it though I can understand how this dangerous practice may have evolved.
    Cheers, Rob.

As Moo says, a Thai guy known as a Monkey jumps on and wraps his legs over the riders arms. He steers the shute. They are not strapped on.

In which case it is a totally unsafe operation. Normal commercial operations 'with pilot' employ 2 harnesses front and rear. The primary action of the 'pilot' is to ensure a gentle landing.

Any pics of the harness yet?
    Cheers, Rob.

Poor guy, and his wife watched the whole thing.
One of those things where you just don't know.

I've seen it done a million times on that beach. The "Spider monkey" guy hanging on is quite usual (And they don't have ANY safety gear).

The operator seemed to be taking a great deal of time and effort over securing the harness for the rider on the beach.
Hard to know if he did anything different than he had done many times before that.
The man seemed to somehow suddenly slip out of the harness in flight, so the lifejacket he had over it must have given way as well.

A man's gotta know his limitations. RIP

And now the good caring people of the world are outraged by the lack of OH&S in Thailand and want the Govt to act. Doesn't anybody take responsibility for their own actions anymore?
Sorry, I do not think this was a tragic event, shit happens.
Feel sorry for the fella but you take a risk crossing the road, even with all the rules and regulations under the sun. When your number is up then that is that
Sure the harness was more than likely passed its used by date, no idea. Never hire a jet ski and never get out of your comfort zone. Especially on your holiday. FFS

Old mate walks up to a Soi dog hanging around me and asked me if my dog bites? No!, I say and he goes to pat the dog, the dog bites him and he shouts at me, "you said your dog doesn't bite". I just said to him, "that's not my dog mate".
