    Thailand: Jellyfish

    Pha-ngan issues jellyfish alert
    September 14, 2018

Tourists were warned on Friday against swimming in a bay off Koh Pha-ngan after many dangerous box jellyfishes have been sighted.
Sophon Thongdee, deputy director general of the Marine and Coastal Resources Department, said a letter had been sent to the Surat Thani governor to put warning signs at the Chalok Lar Bay.
The governor was also asked to have officials inform tourists of the danger of jellyfish at the spot. Jatuporn Burutphat, director general of the department, said the jellyfish have been sighted since September 8 and their numbers appeared to have increased with 25 members of the Chironex indrasaksajiae species seen in the shallow bay.
Tourists were advised against swimming until further notice.

I did say 'thousands' - they're a tourist attraction, people go out in boats to see them

This phenomena is not unusual during stormy season when jellyfish seek sheltered waterways. Even in Australian waters, they will enter harbours and estuaries many days ahead of approaching storms.
    Cheers, Rob.
Lifes journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well-preserved body, but to skid in sideways totally worn out, shouting: holy s.h.i.t what a ride!

    Getting technical ...

University of Hawaii jellyfish expert trains Thai researchers through Fulbright program
    31 August 2018

Thai Morbakka sp. box jellyfish collected by Angel Yanagihara and Jeff Milisen Koh Tao, Gulf of Thailand, July 2017.

Angel Yanagihara, one of the world’s foremost experts on jellyfish, has started a six-week post as a U.S. State Department Fulbright Specialist to collect lethal box jellyfish in Thailand and train researchers on how to best treat the gelatinous creature’s stings.

“Numerous recent lethal and life-threatening stings by box jellyfish species in Thailand are a source of deep concern to national leaders in the Thai Ministry of Health,” said Yanagihara, an associate research professor at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa John A. Burns School of Medicine and Békésy Laboratory of Neurobiology in the Pacific Biosciences Research Center at the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology.

Her expertise and innovative technologies were specifically sought out in the newly approved Fulbright project proposed by researchers at Thailand’s Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital at Mahidol University.
