On my last trip I did a visa extension only to find out that my annual travel insurance only covered me for up to 42 days out of the UK in one hit. I contacted them but they said they could not extend the cover while I was away. I then thought about getting a separate policy to cover the extra days but again, difficult or expensive if you are already on that trip. So my last few days were spent taking extra care.

Does the travel insurance you buy pay it up front?

Mine I'd have to pay and get it back
I'm guessing emergencies are a an exception? Of if you need a full medical repatriation and can't afford it?

Edit: Mine is all good, and I assume they'd all be the same in serious cases.

If a serious illness or accident occurs and you’re hospitalised, make sure you or someone acting on your behalf calls our emergency assistance team as soon as possible.
If you’re covered, we'll communicate with the hospital directly to arrange payment for your treatment – so you don’t have to worry about any of the costs, and receive the treatment you need without delay.

Don’t believe any stories about large amount of claims being rejected. Two travel insurance companies are my clients and I review their claims handing from a compliance perspective. I have never seen a legitimate claim being rejected. Most rejected claims are for missed flights or strikes but when a person is injured on holiday and was not involved in a restricted activity then it’s always covered. Being an epileptic I disclose that and I’m loaded about 20 euro which is peanuts.

As I tell all my clients, keep your mouth shut, admit nothing and 9 times out of 10 it will work out.

My mate was working illegally in the Bronx. Been there for 4 years. Fell off a scaffold and broke his leg. Flew home immediately. Said it was agony as it was a particularly nasty break. No one thinks of the consequences of not having insurance or healthcare until the sh1t hits the fan.

Always better to say nothing than make something up. Things have a way of tripping people up. If you say you have no memory very difficult to find a flaw. If you give them enough rope they will hang you. The most important words I teach my clients is No comment.

Such simple advice, and yet most people's natural reaction is to keep piling words on top of each other in these situations. I can talk myself to the bottom of the Mariana trench when nervous or uncomfortable.

It's hard to feel guilty though I suppose. Insurance companies are every bit as predatory as banks. My only experience with a claim in the last 10 years was over a waterlogged phone during Songkran. An insurance company that I had bought dozens of policies from and had never claimed anything in years was having none of it because I didn't have a police report filled out. And I just wanted to claim repair costs and wasn't trying to score a new phone. You think it would have been obvious to them that I wasn't taking the piss, which I'm sure it was.

At the end I threatened them with consumer protection and they promptly coughed up. I then voted with my virtual feet immediately after.

The best advice I gave someone is if you are going to walk down the road with a baseball bat which is considered a dangerous weapon and reverses the burden of proof, always bring a glove with you. Then if caught you can say you are going to play a game in the park rather than beat someone’s head in.

90% of convictions stem from bad interviews rather than from real evidence. I can explain away most things but lies or half truths or confessions are worse than a smoking gun.

On the back of my laminated copy of my passport page is my insurance details and emergency contacts. Folded in half it fits neatly in my small travel wallet.

My phone insurance covers lost phone
Whenever my phone gets a bit dodgy I just chuck it in the ocean and claim I lost it
This way I get a new phone vs a repaired one

55 why not give it away to someone in Thailand? They'll crack it for 200 baht and make use of it.

I'm a pussy and feel they can crack

Funny story my Samsung S8 Plus was beat to hell and cracked
So I was just gonna throw it in the ocean and get a new one
I don't know why but stopped in the phone store before going to do it

I didn't have insurance on this one and I always get insurance!

So this one is in my bag now for Nut
Ao figures it will be 3k to fix
Even if 6k still worth it because still a very good phone
