    Any coffee lovers here?

There is currently an international coffee convention going on in Chiang Mai right now. It runs from Feb 14 to 17 at the convention hall on Canal road, just a bit north of the city.

I learned more about coffee during the 4 hours I spent there today than I've learned about coffee over my entire adult life.

My good friend, Naret Woei runs a coffee plantation up in Chiang Rai and is currently trying to market his specialty beans world wide. Coffee growing in northern Thailand is a rapidly expanding business, but it still takes marketing.

Naret and I first met about 8 or 9 years ago when we joined an acquaintance on a fly fishing trip to a mountain river in north west Thailand. Naret and I hit it off right away and have been on several trips together since that time. But, Naret move out of Chiang Mai and located in Chiang Rai where he took up coffee planting and farming. We hadn't seen each other for a couple of years when we met up at the Maddog cafe for a beer and pizza.

Today I visited Naret and his pretty girl friend at his booth at the convention hall

While his girl friend and her brother were minding the booth, Naret and I toured around the convention, and "sampled' dozens of different coffees brewed or dripped in many different ways. All I can say is WOW! I din't realize it was such an art form.

There was even a contest on the art form of "painting" a picture with foam on top of a cup of coffee.

There were about 10 big billboards describing the development of the coffee industry in northern Thailand. I just took photos and video, and will read it all at my leisure later

I'm more of a tea drinker, and always have been. At home in Canada I pretty much only drink tea... with sugar and lemon. But, I always have some top quality coffee beans for when I have guests, and grind up enough for a pot full. When I go out to a fast food joint with friends (McD, Burger King, etc) I will have a coffee that I always take black.

However, at the show we went around tasting all the different varieties, and I was pretty amazed at the differences. I've got pretty sensitive taste buds, and a good "nose" for smell. By the end of 3 or 4 hours I had drunk more coffee than I would normally have in about 2 months. I didn't get to sleep until about 1:30 last night and I didn't have my usual afternoon nap. 5555

I hate Coffee, can't even stand the smell of it.

Been like that all my life.

It seriously makes me close to throwing up. If the guys at work come to a meeting they bring 1 or 2 coffees with them and I am.....right you sit that end of the board table, I'm down here, or over in the corner with a window open.

I'm glad I don't like coffee..these guys spend a fortune every week on their specialist brews.
If they are coming to see me in the display they have to detour to a certain coffee shop or cart on the way.

It's almost as expensive as smoking.

I have to say it is a real growth industry, coffee shops with very special brews popping up all over the place.
