    Transferwise

I replied to a money transfer thread when Rivo and OG used this transfer service

But it was so frigging good I felt it might help people if it had it's own thread

I used Transferwise for the 1st time yesterday

I sent 1600cad to Ao's bank account in Thailand

It converted to 36,125 baht net
That same transfer through my bank would have converted to 33k plus 15-25cad in fees

Plus it took about 8hrs to hit her bank

I honestly couldn't believe how good the rate and how quick it was

They gave me a rate of 22.55 when the spot was 22.85
That is unreal for a transfer

A big positive is Ao can send smaller sums now, when needed and not have to pay a fixed fee that makes it not worth sending smaller sums

With TW, she can send 150cad and pay 4cad..........

Transferwise now offers an international ATM card service, where you can keep different currencies in your account at the same time..
And withdraw firstly of that currency, but if not available will use transfer from another currency..

Outside the usual banking scope, so outside the view for taxes..

Not have made this yet, but considering it..

I use TW to pay for my stock from the Bangkok factory on the recommendation for young Rivo. Guess I owe him a few beers as its saved lots.

I didnt know about the card and like most on this forum I travel a bit so will look into that.

I like the story of how two Estonian lads started the company

Like a lot of good stories, this one starts with two friends.

They’re both from Estonia. Taavet was the first employee at Skype, so he got paid in euros. But he lived in London, and needed pounds to pay the bills. Kristo worked for Deloitte and lived in London. He got paid in pounds, but had a mortgage back in Estonia. He needed to pay that in euros.

Every month they moved their money the old way – which wasted their time and money. So they invented a beautifully simple workaround that became a billion-dollar business.
