A YOUNG Melbourne tourist has died after plunging from the ninth floor of a hotel in Phuket.

The 21-year-old man, identified as Sebastian Eric Faulkner, fell from a balcony at the Andaman Beach Suites Hotel in the early hours of New Year's Day, local media reported.

He was found with severe injuries including a fractured skull before being taken to nearby Patong Hospital.

He was then moved to Bangkok Hospital, where he later died.

It appeared Mr Faulkner had jumped from the balcony of the four-star resort, the Bangkok Post reported.

The Phuket News reported that Mr Faulkner sought medical assistance for hallucinations from Patong Hospital on December 30, but "left without anyone noticing".

He had been travelling with friends, who are assisting authorities with their inquiries.

It is believed his friends did not know Mr Faulkner's whereabouts until after his death, the reports said.

His older cousin Ben Faulkner today posted a message on his Facebook page about the death.

"Seb Faulkner it's like a nightmare I can't wake up from! I have memories of having a beer with you, having many a laugh with you & teasing you as your older & dramatically less talented cousin - no one can ever take them away from me - they will be with me forever mate!," he posted.

A representative from his workplace, ANL Shipping, said Mr Faulkner was due to complete a 12-month co-op position at the company on 25 January.

"I have handled the news with the other co-ops because they were very close knit friends and they are all in shock at the moment," the spokeswoman said.

"They heard on Facebook ... we are in shock, he was a very good young person and will be very sadly missed I must admitůthey are all very devastated about the news."

She said Mr Faulkner had been due to return to uni to complete his degree this year after a 12-month training role at the company.

It is understood he is a former student of St Bede's College in Mentone and studied at Australian Catholic University.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed it is providing consular assistance to Mr Faulkner's family.

Members of Mr Faulkner's family were expected to arrive in Phuket yesterday.

Very sad loss of a young life.

There was a UK tourist, 22? shot dead at the full moon party on new Years Eve, he was dancing on the beach doing nothing wrong when 2 Thai gangs decided to have a shoot out, he was hit by a stray bullet and killed

See Nomad's Post UK man killed at Thai Beach Party.
