    Beating the J* system

    J* bookings

When flying MEL to BKK return you can access the advertised specials as you would expect. You can also get the special price on one way flights to BKK. However, you generally cannot get the special price on one way BKK to MEL.

Also, if you try to book BKK to MEL return, then you generally don't get the special prices, particularly for a business class leg.

Have spoken twice to J* staff who have confirmed that after making payment and assuming you have a fully flexible MEL to BKK return ticket, you can move the MEL to BKK leg to occur after the BKK to MEL leg, thus essentially changing the ticket to a BKK to MEL return ticket for your TG. You just need to make up any fare difference. However given that one way MEL to BKK legs are cheap, hopefully the difference is minimal or nil, thus still getting the benefit of the special.

Have just bought some tickets so will see if they are true to their word in a couple of days.

I thought it would have to be on the same route i.e. Mel-BKK, with BKK-Mel being a different route....

Interested to see how you go

Not finalised yet. Best guess is arrive 20 Sep for a couple of days, then to Hong Kong for a week, then BKK till first week of November, with a trip to Singapore in between.

Successfully changed the first leg to now occur after the return flight, so changed a MEL to BKK return to a BKK to MEL return flight. I couldn't do it online, but done over the phone without any fuss.

Only one wrinkle which we had a blew about. Whilst not stated in the rules, their view is that a non-sale fare can't be swapped for a sale fare, even when upgrading from economy to business, in terms of calculating the fare difference. The price difference is non-sale to non-sale pricing. Only raised an issue with it because I had read all the terms carefully and the business sale fare was only $50 more expensive than new economy fare.

What airline are we talking about?

Im just about to go to Velocity Gold on Virgin Australia, and was thinking of Brisbane to Bangkok on Singapore Airlines and using points to upgrade to J

It seems you might have found some cheap J class fares? be interested to know which airline your talking about.
