Hopefully that's the bad storm out of the way...

Is it worth visiting the Similans in the wet season?

High season in the Similans is from December until April, when the monsoon stays far away. The best period to visit is March, when the winds are calm and the water clear. The national park is closed from May 16 to November 15

I worked on boats in the Similans for a few years and whilst this isn't the first time this has happened it is a rare occurrence. I am a bit out of touch so I can't really make a recommendation but just do a little research on the operator you want to use and their boats and you should be OK.

I have seen some boats out there that were just wrecks waiting to happen.

There was a famous case of a big boat operating with her hull so badly compromised she relied entirely on the pumps to keep her afloat. When the pumps failed she became a wreck dive on Beacon Beach. Not only did the operators lose the boat they were also fined for damaging the reef.

I remember seeing the Dive Asia boat when she first starting operating and saying to friends "with such high sides, and no ballast she would be a nightmare in a cross wind. Sadly I was right. There is very little in the way of regulation in the construction of boats, the flaws in the Dive Asia boat should have been spotted when the plans were submitted, if indeed that even happened.

The first time I saw it , I thought it was for use on the lake at Kao Sok , honestly.

    From the article:

"Just why so many small boat ''captains'' chose to risk the lives of their tourist passengers despite weather warnings is likely to be a question asked by marine authorities and envoys tomorrow."

    Oh really!

Why is the choice whether to put to sea or not is left up to the captains and not the harbour authorities should be the question. They have repeatedly demonstrated they are too irresponsible to make that choice.

    *****EDIT*****

I just thought about my post above and realized maybe why this is the case. The first time the harbour authorities made the wrong call they would probably be swamped with complaints and demands for compensation from the operators. Plus the loss of face for being wrong probably wouldn't sit well.
