Air Asia to check passengers with Interpol

BUDGET airline AirAsia says it will become the first carrier to check its passengers' passports against Interpol's database of stolen and lost travel documents.

The Kuala Lumpur-based airline said on Tuesday it will begin implementing the screening this month as part of its effort to enhance aviation security in the aftermath of the disappearance of a Malaysia Airlines jet on March 8.

The Interpol database had previously been available only to government immigration authorities. Interpol's I-Checkit system will be deployed across all of AirAsia's international operations, covering 600 flights daily.

Attempts to solve the mystery of what happened to the missing Malaysia Airlines plane with 239 people on board revealed that two of its passengers had travelled with stolen passports. The Austrian and Italian passports used were on Interpol's database as having been stolen in Thailand.

Ronald Noble, Interpol secretary general, said the decision of AirAsia to screen its passengers using the Interpol database "will raise the bar across the industry for passenger safety and security".

"After today, airlines will no longer have to depend solely on countries screening passports to keep passengers safe from terrorists and other criminals who use stolen passports to board flights," he said.

At present, fewer than 10 countries systematically screen passenger passports against the Interpol database.

Be interesting to see how many passengers get denied boarding because of the an administrative "lag" between systems - probably a good idea in theory but wonder if the cure will be worse than the disease...

    Enjoy...

Surely a better way would be for interpol to issue a file containing all the data that the airlines can add to their system. Then interpol could send updates as and when. No permanent connection between the two systems necessary.

I flew out of the LCCT on the 8th which was it's last day for AA. Was hoping for a 'Everything Must Go' sale in the duty free, but sadly not to be.

Can't they just stop anyone who looks vaguely "dodgy" from boarding?

    Goodbye Pattaya .. 555
On arrival here in Cambodia they took a thumb and a 4 finger scan of each hand as well as the photo. Surely if every international point of entry everywhere did this the terrorist are stuffed?
I know freedom and all that but if the presenters prints don't match my passport next visit chances are its been stolen and after a simple check of a stolen passport register and the user is caught?

I'm with you Dlew. If it was done everywhere then those with a dodgy passport couldn't fly to other countries so there would be no market for them

As for privacy I don't have a problem, especially if it makes my travels safer.

I posted the OP because I thought it is a good selling point, If it means the plane I'm on has no false passports then I'll fly with them assuming costs are similar.

Not before time and should make the whole AA thing far more enjoyable.
    Cheers, Rob.
Lifes journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well-preserved body, but to skid in sideways totally worn out, shouting: holy s.h.i.t what a ride!

First fingerprint scanners at Thailand entry points and now this? I feel safer already.
