Another interesting read about future plans for Thailand’s railways.

Did interraiing for 2 months when I was 19 and was amazing. 150 pounds for unlimited European train travel. Camped the entire time. Highlights was camping in the alps (interlaken) in Switzerland being woken up by cowbells as cows grazed beside the tent. Going on a gondola in Venice. Dropping acid in Zagreb, watching a bike riding drug dealer crash into a lamppost in Amsterdam because I kept asking him what he was saying, drinking glasses of tea and smoking shisha in Istanbul. Really opened my eyes to travel and the world.

Also, we were going on a train from Munich to a resort on the Adriatic in Italy. Got on the train without realising that the train split. Fell asleep and woke up the next day expecting to see the sea and a beach resort. Actually was pulling into Milan. Still had a blast. Other things learned is that Germans are quite precious about reservations and I am quite precious about being woken up. Does not make for a good interaction.

One thing I have just finished out is that you can get a train from Amsterdam to China. It takes something like 20 days but is definitely something I want to do in the next year or 2. Also I read a book about a train journey in Australia that cuts the country or something. Have to find that again. Have never been to Australia and would be a dream to travel by train.

At Interlaken did you go up the cable train to the Jungfrau? With views of the Eiger etc? Love that area...

Did a bungee jump out of the cable car. Always remember when I got to the bottom there was this stoner ga e me a j to calm down. He asked did I like it. Said it was good. He pointed across the river and said in the biggest stoner voice ‘there fcuking acres of the sh1t growing over there man. James Bond revolving restaurant is there too but I didn’t go. Went tandem hang gliding. Loved it.

No cables involved with that one....it's a cog railway through a tunnel dug out by hand out of solid rock 19 miles long in the early 1900's.

Gotta get myself back there again before my days are up.

    Cog-railway... that's it. Couldn't think of the term... 55

Just remember seeing those fighter jets flying around... about a thousand feet below us...

I unknowingly filmed an avalanche that killed 6 Swiss Army guys last time I was up there and the evacuation of the rest of them by Swiss rescue chopper.

Crikey. How bizarre... was the avalanche above or below you?

I never realised at the time that access to the north face of the Eiger was via the cog-railway tunnel... often used to rescue climbers...

    Above and in the distance.
I was looking at it as it started not knowing they were on top of it when it let go. Had my camera in hand taking pics and switched it over to video mode.
I was later sat in the restaurant and filmed the rest of them being choppered out.

I enjoyed the old Clint Eastwood movie "The Eiger Sanction" when it came out. It was roughly based on the many original climbs that are written in history of that mountain face.

Yeah about there or a little further up,think it's Kleine Scheidegg.
I'd love to be able to stay up there somewhere for a week or 2..Interlaken or Lauterbrunnen. Have stayed at the latter twice for a total of about 8 nights now...t's a magic place.

I agree. Feel like you are in some parallel fantasy land there... feels like it was painted by an artist... especially in spring.

I don't know if true, but were told they can switch that waterfall on and off manually in that last photo?

The Sound of Music always came to mind when I was there... 55

Doubt it,no dams up there. Why would they want to turn it off? Had an encounter with my Canadian GF at the base of it one night 55

The whole basin up the top (other side of the valley) drains into Trummelbach Falls then the river there.
