I've never been but I want to go now.

I take it you kinda need to hire a bike to have an easier time there yeah?

It does make seeing the island a lot easier and the traffic is not an issue like other parts of LOS.
But if you do not like bikes there are plenty of jeep and car hire places around.

So much like FNQld's Magnetic Island ... if only Maggie had TG's ...

for me, a scooter is essential! i can drive it al the day and i love to be lost in the little countryside roads.
And, in Koh Samui, the cab is very expensive... you can rent a scoot for 7-8$ a day... it's better if u rant it at your hotel.
Don't forget to bring your elmet and your international drivers licence... it cost (here in Canada) only 30$ and it help you to avoid any problem with the cops...

there is no need for an international drivers licence...your Australian licence (even for car when you are on a scooter) is fine for the first 3 months of being here

I have lived on Samui for 18 months and never been asked to show my licence BTW

agree that a scooter is the way to go here....but get a hotel by (the beach and) nightlife so you can do your drinking and walk home

sounds like you know samui well, bacwan.

Could you recommend hotels close to beach and bars for about ฿2000/day. i plan to be there in jan 14.

I am told lamai is better than chawaeng. Do you agree?

^^ Lamai Inn....right on the beach...should be about 1500 baht a night at that time as its peak season Steve

I'd say if you are under 30 and want to hit nightclubs go to Chaweng....for a guy 40 up lamai is a better choice as its more bar oriented...although it does have 2 clubs....Fusion and ONE Club
