    Phuket/San Francisco/Panama City/Medellin-The Fall Tour

I've been on the road a lot this year. I love hanging out here in lala land with the TG, but it's time to roll.

I have a month long trip, starting in San Francisco to see the family. Five days later I'm off to Panama City for a couple of days, see the big dig. Then, off to Columbia for a week. Then fly back through Los Angeles and San Francisco for another week.

An exciting vacation! I haven't been back to America in 3 years and never been to South America.

First stop: A six hour layover at Shanghai’s Pudong Airport. Apparently, they'll let you out and I can grab a cab or train in do some sightseeing. But, I get in at 6 AM.

A three hour tour, a three hour tour. (Gilligan's Island reference)

I have to think about this.

    Sounds like a great trip.

If you have not been to China before Shanghai’s a great spot. Pity you didn't stay over night. But If you get time have a look.

Yes I'm definitely considering a world-wind tour of China's biggest city. I'm going to wait till I speak to someone at the airport but I'm armed with rudimentary knowledge of how to do a quick tour.

Layover At Shanghai's Pudong International Airport | Layover Guide

I bought a travel insurance policy for the first time. 1 Month for $150, complete medical. My Thai policy doesn't cover Amerika. I thought it was a deal.

Out buying fake Raybans for the folks at home today. 100 baht each with real fake tags and stickers on them. I wear the Polaroid version, 250 baht.

You want some Dupe? Sorry, family only.

You'd have to ask someone over the age of 55 in the US, because no one under 55 buys Levi's 555

Levis were about $40 in Macys last time I was there 3 years ago. They're usually on sale somewhere.

I'm packing jeans, shoes and sneakers. I haven't worn any of this stuff since I last went home three years ago. The shoes all smell of mildew. I was wiping everything down with vinegar and water soaked rag last night. Everything is so wet here from the rain, I left them in front of a fan to dry, much better this morning.

Audiobooks on iPhone, check. 10 different movies on iPad, check. Valium, check. Okay, 23 hours HKT to SFO. The weird part is it's still the same day. I lose two coming home.

It's very corrosive air, salt and humidity on Phuket, rust, mildew, corrosion, rubber perishing.

My bikes had a lot of it and the plastic buckles on my riding boots just perished and fell apart from being stored in my apartment that breezes direct from the sea constantly blew into.

Resting in the luxurious Novotel in Panama City after four harried, family orientated, days in San Francisco. Living there for 30 years, let me list a few obsevations after being away for five years.

    1. THE most beautiful stylish women everywhere
    2. Marijuana more dominant than car exhaust
    3. Tattoos and piercings (but I guess they're everywhere)
    4. It may be the bum and crazy people capitol of the world
    5. Nice cars
    6. Incredibly good weather every day
    7. Street hot dogs are the best
    8. Sourdough bread
    9. Drunk A@%h*^#!s
    10. The hottest Asian women I've seen anywhere (now including China, Korea, and all of SE Asia)
    11. Great food and wine
    12. A tourist mecca (the city is a finhancial center but it's also Disneylandesque)
    13. The best craft beers
    14. Hipsters (I don't get it but obviously some get into it)
    15. American English spoken

Got some pics but it's late in Panama. Took a walk around the hotel area. It looks like an American city. They use $'s.

Off to the canal tomorrow. I've been reading all about the building of it. Over 30,000 people died in the construction, an amazing story, truly one of the wonders of the world.

    How was Dupes?

I believe the staggering amount of deaths at the canal was due to mosquito related disease, yellow fever, and it would never have been completed without the efforts to kill them off and sanitise the canal zone.
