Thanks for all the replies if I end up going to Krabi again I will visit Koh Lanta always been on my list.

Got to say the beach in Ao Nang is only a 5 out of 10 but Railay and cave beach are some of the best beaches I have visited (15mins from Ao Nang.)

I visited Langkawi (Malaysia) a few years back great laid back place but just nothing happening at night so ended up leaving a couple of days early.

There is no nightlife on the trang islands. A few beach bars sure but that's it. But it depends what you want. If you want anywhere offering beer you'll find it there. If you want a selection of bars with some offering live music then you should look to some of the more well known haunts. Koh Samui is probably a good shout too. Lamai.

Has anybody been to Hua Hin and Koh Chang ?
I think my ideal place is beach during the day and hitting bars at night so probably need to look at more tourist type towns and islands. Koh Samui I will visit again one day and stay mainly in Lamai also Koh Pha-ngan looks interesting also, have never been there
I try to go on about 4 holidays a year mainly for around 9-12 days so like exploring different places. The next Thai trip I am planning is for November next year I notice as soon as it hits November the hotels almost double there prices I presume its high season in the south.
    Thanks for all the comments.

Hua Hin has enough nightlife for a week or so ( handy ferry from Pattaya ) but I didn't like the beach , sea was quite rough and signs everywhere warning of jellyfish...

Lamai is great for a week , but weather isn't always that good in Nov ( they have a later rainy season than Phuket )

Phuket would probably be your best bet , loads of beaches to visit and the nightlife

I think I already mentioned Koh Chang. I was there about 6 or 7 years ago and enjoyed it, BUT ONLY BECAUSE i HAD A LADY WITH ME AND i LIKE TO EXPLORE ON MOTORBIKE. Without a bike or a lady I would have been bored silly. The beaches were lovely and some of the resorts were nice, but the island is too big to get anywhere by walking, and there was little or no night life when I visited. I did a complete tour of the island. Unfortunately, all my photos I had disappeared when the site I had them stored on closed down. They might be on CD disks buried in some drawer at home, but that is a long process finding them and putting them on some site to share.

Slightly bitter sweet ones for me!

I came back to see Bee in spring 2014 to take her to Koh Samui and she didn’t turn up!

I was going to discuss sponsorship!

She’s now unhappily married in Ireland to an Italian who doesn’t have a job and I discovered the other day that she is €8,000 in debt.

Honestly if you like Thailand and haven't been to Hua Hin you should go

If you stay in the tourist village area around the Hilton, I think it is the best set up tourist area in all of Thailand

I think it, without a doubt, the best for having a nice dinner and strolling afterwards doing a bit of a bar crawl
The p4p area in the village is the best set up p4p area
Reminds me of the maze type bar areas in Japan

Now the quality of girls isn't as good as other places but if you were happy in Ao Nang them Hua Hin will be p4p will be fine enough for you

    As for the beach
Yes it isn't a white sand beach but the water is actually pretty clear
And there are some decent Thai restaurants set up on the beach where you can get food and beers and use their chairs

I honestly think, based on your posts, that you would love HH

But I do stress to stay by the Hilton(if you have the dough stay at the Hilton!)
Because up on the main street can be a bit hectic

But once in that tourist village square it really is great

^ if you do go to Hua Hin , Don't stay at the Hilton , it is not worth the money, it is long overdue an upgrade ( I made the mistake of staying there in March 2018 ) - good area , but many other hotels that are much better

I don't mind the older big 4-5* hotels in Thailand if it had that sort of wood finish look, which Hilton does
    Royal Orchid Sheraton is similar

I haven't stayed in years but had thier buffet breakfast and used their pool 2 years ago and both were still very good

But as you said there is a lot of options

But not really any right in that square that suit me and I prefer to be right in that little square

What's the best way to go to Hua Hin from BKK, by train, bus or taxi and how long will it take? I thinking go there next time I come to Thailand seen Phuket enough and Pattaya was not for us. I want some beach life but not so far from BKK.

^ quickest way is by taxi..maybe 2.5-3 hours

    bus/minibus maybe another 30 mins-1 hour

the nicest way is the train but it takes 5+ hours

If the beach was nice in HH I may well have had a stint living there...but I have been there at least half a dozen times over about 15 years and have never swum in the sea...it has always looked dirty to me...and there is alway pony poo on the beach...in short the beach is not for me..and it does get hit by bad weather in the wet season...

on the positive side..it's a nice liveable sized town (city) with all you need...nice restaurants, good shopping, a pretty decent nightlife (some good expat bars + clubs with a lively enough P4P scene) and there are some nice quieter places either side of it like Cha Am and Minao Bay

So I just gave a very positive review as a tourist

But I'd never live there as an expat
    The traffic is absolutely horrendous
The worse I've seen in Thailand

I guess if you were living up in the mountains where they are nice affordable villas you wouldn't be down in the congestion

But even that road that is adjacent to the train in congested almost all th time

When I stayed at HH , we booked a few days during the week and told the owner we might extend to stay over the weekend , I didnt think that would be a problem as the place was empty .
The owner said we better let them know so as possible as the place gets full from all the Thai People coming down from BK on weekends....I thought she was joking at first . Naively I never thought of Thai's Having weekends off like in the West as they always seem to be working and most work 6 days a week .
Sure enough it did get full and lucky we listened and booked more days (@ 500 a night) , only thing She had to move us on Friday from the shit rooms to the Shitter rooms downstairs for the weekend 5555

Thanks again good to get an idea of other places HH looks like a place I will visit. There is a problem with a lot of the destinations and that is getting there from Perth I dont like flying to much or sitting at an airport or mini van for hours. So looks like my quickest and most direct flight (1 stop only) is Krabi or Phuket .
When I actually spend more time like 4-5 weeks in Thailand I will definetely do more exploring to the places mentioned in this thread. Looking back at my last holiday will be spending a lot more time in Thailand. Thanks

Krabi and Phuket are good destinations with lots to see and do. I once had a time share in Jomptien (Pattaya) and would use it as an exchange to Phuket for a week. A lady friend of mine in Phuket had a car and when my week was up in Phuket we drove drove over to Krabi and Ao Nang where we rented a place there for a week. We rented a boat for a few days and visited a bunch of islands in the area. It was one of my nicer holidays.
