    Down to earth

Earth Day falls on Wednesday (Apr 22), but you probably haven't realised that since you're still busy trying to get the white clay from Songkran off your fingernails. Each year, Earth Day sees events organised around the world in support of environmental causes. Since we think you can do better than declining a plastic bag after shopping at 7-Eleven, this week Guru searches for ways us city-folk...

I'm planning on binning my cigarette butts on Wednesday instead of throwing them away. We all have to do our part.

Is he going to use Handy Andy or 'Palm'olive ??

Maybe he thinks he will conserve rubber by going bareback 555

As for the bags you put your shopping in..... The total volume of a supermarket shopping bag when compressed is tiny. The major concerns are environmental issues and aesthetic.

These bags, along with other polutants have caused major blockages of drainage systems. The other big issues is that they are just an ugly sight when left to be blown around by the wind and collect in large numbers, just like anything else thrown away without concern for the environmental impact.

Same for ciggy butts. Except they are just downright poisonous in so many more ways.

Everyone craps on about the plastic bags you take your stuff home in.
What about all the layers of packaging the supermarket lays on you before they even give you something capable of carrying all your $hit to the car?

    Don't buy pre-packaged food... it's rarely good...

Heard a saying recently that if you're buying food instead of ingredients, you're doing something wrong.

I can't stand the polystyrene trays that most meat and other food is presented on. When you unwrap the stuff you can smell the chemicals.. that smell, and the residual chemicals is deposited into the food that is in the packaging. We are ingesting that ****. They say it is food safe but I don't believe it.

All our veges, unless for convenience are bought fresh as we need them and our meat is bought from... now get this, a real live butcher. A butcher who gets carcasses delivered in a big Isuzu 6 wheeler daily at 4:00am. When the boys get to work they do what butchers do. At our local, most carcasses are hung for a couple of days before butchering. The steak is 'aged' even longer. The boys will take special orders as well. We had quite a few family around at my cuzzies place at Xmas. I bought a whole rump for the ensuing BBQs. When I went in the week before to order I was asked 'Would you like it aged?' 'Yes please' 'How long' 'What would you recommend' 'About a week would be good' 'Ok sounds good to me' That stuff was amazing.

We have a couple of Community Gardens here, but of course some scumbag arseholes spoil it for those investing time and energy into worthwhile projects like this. Vandalism...

As for Root Garden. I had a root in the garden when I was much younger 555. Great idea though.
