I had lots of friends though....both Thai and Expats, male and female...plus loads of guys from home and in here visiting regularly to hang out with...I also speak passable Thai so I never felt out of my depth anywhere...
I did have a few regular TGF's and a couple of expat gals I spent time with...last one was Hungarian and she always kept me busy...55
I'd also get around the country and outside of it a bit every year...I made that a rule...and I'd head up to BKK for a dose of disco and nightlife with a few galpals a couple of times each year, and over to Kamala to see friends as well....always good to mix it up...
TBH I saw more people socially there (almost every day) than I do here in Sydney where most of my long term friends are based...and that's mostly by choice...I enjoy my alone time more as I am getting on in age...I love a free day to just do my walking, swimming, cooking and eating....catch a movie on a wet day, do some shopping, theatre, gigs, the symphony, opera, take a ferry ride...it's all a joy to me
I think I'm such a family guy that I sort of equate that with being the only way to be integrated

Again, not saying that it is the only way....

It's funny

Me and Nut did a pretty hard hike up to a waterfall in Samui

I smoked him on the way up
Was kinda ragging on him that his 50yr old stepdad is kicking his ass

Well I became about 80yrs old when walking down 555

My knees were barking going down!

He seemed pretty smart and clued in
And I commend anyone who made a life in a foreign country

But I also think people get a bit too caught up on "culture " of places

I think at 1st, if you are a nice person, that carries you, as a guest
Just be nice
I remember BM's saying you have to do this and that when you visit the village for the 1st time.

I didn't worry about any of that.....I was just nice to people and polite

Then once you are immersed in the culture, you will naturally pick up the nuisances

Like this guy.....I am sure he is highly respected in his Thai circle given his Thai fluency

But I also think him(and I) will always be looked at as outsiders

That's just how Thais are.....and I don't mean that negatively towards them

Verkala looks like a very interesting place(near Goa), and I love Wayne. He's a great traveler and vlogger.

Wayne does a lot of Bali and SEA, but he's at home here in Perth at the moment. Really great and unique vlogger as he constantly engages people and talks to them.

Perth is really such a nice city. Loads of great people too.

I love Wayn's work. This one's interesting.

I've never had any brushes with cops in LoS, but I've always found them all to be very nice and polite when I've seen them operate. Just typical Thais, I guess. Interesting hearing some insider stuff from a BiB. He's on camera, so salt to taste.

^ excellent English.

I had plenty of encounters with them in the nearly 10 years i was there and something like 150k kms i did around SE Asia by car and bike and nearly all of them were quite pleasant.
Copped a few minor fines and donated some "tea money" a few times along the way....pillion no helmet, only having a copy of my licence when pulled over, parking infringements etc etc

A few i remember...

The cop near Udon Thani that pulled me over for doing 118kms/hr in a 90 zone (they had a radar)...."ooooo....you clazy man,you oversapeed very mut....you in a hurry i can see....you give me 200 baht and you can go" 555

Near the same place but travelling in the opposite direction pulled up for speeding again by a big cop that looked like Idi Amin. This time i flew to Udon and was in a hire car and forgot my driving licence and wasn't able to produce it only my passport...."what you do in Udon"....me...go see dek (baby) at Seka, showed him a pic of the infant and he has a good look.....and with a huff he gives it back and waves me on to continue on 😅

Another pulled me over on my Honda VFR800 bike and as i'm digging for my licence in my pocket....."no no i don't want, just look bike....suayyyy (beautiful) then waves me on 55

Then the drunk one out the middle of nowhere at a boom gate/checkpoint wouldn't let us proceed until we had a shot of whiskey with him 555

Just got done for 2000 baht on the last km of a 6+ hour drive. I was on a road that winds under the highway that branches off in various directions making it hard to know for certain where to go. I was in the right lane with two lanes turning left. I stopped at the light however all the cars to my left kept turning left making me think maybe i should be turning also. There was no traffic coming through from the right and after about 5 cars had gone through I stupidly followed them.

About 100m down the road we turn right and around 10 cops on the road pulling over multiple cars. Two cops indicate that I went through a red light yet it seemed like they were talking about the right turn just made. Much discussion about the infringement and a fine of 4000 baht, and that it was too much. They showed me the video of the infringement at the left turn so that cleared that part up.

He wouldn't budge from 2000 baht to settle it, and showed me the ticket book with 4000 baht fee for red light infringement. CJ wanted to go to the police station to pay, however I settled it (hopefully) there. Hopefully I won't hear the words som nam nah in a few weeks.
